All this talk of money and Adam. Just a couple of nights ago John Stossel had a segment on his show discussing how there is public acceptance in our culture to have OUTRAGE towards CEOs who earn large amounts of money, yet the culture EMBRACES the huge salaries some athletes and entertainers receive without batting an eye. The subject of income inequality is in the news. I have never had any doubt that Adam is making a decent living. It is pretty obvious. I do not hold him in any higher esteem because there are more dollar signs associated with him. For christ's sake, 2 million, 5 million, 10 million! Exorbitant amounts of money does not guarantee personal success/happiness.
1. I believe it was mentioned that these earnings are pre-tax gross numbers. There are many expenses which must be paid from these earnings; management of many different kinds, travel, tour expenses, band fees, health care expenses, etc. Then finally, of course, state and federal taxes.
2. Adam's revenue is very closely tied to his performance ... if his brand isn't doing well, then he will not earn well.
3. In this regard, as Adam said, he should be considered more of a small business entity and not a salaried earner. Anyone who starts a business knows how risky it is.
4. CEOs are salaried workers with very high salaries and benefits. Their total income may be partially effected by how well their company performs but only to the extent that their earnings are tied to the stocks they hold. I think it is unfortunate that their negotiated pay does not always reflect their companies success.
5. In this regard, I think CEOs and sports figures are much more comparable, in that neither own the business in which they are paid to perform. Certainly both have unique skill sets but they can still benefit if their company or team under-performs.
6. Not so Adam. He does own the business from which he is paid and his financial success is closely tied to his management skills, business acumen, and his talent. He gains or loses by his own efforts.
