1/20/2009. Half-watching Idol auditions. Why do I do this? So many are embarrassingly bad. Or creepy. Next up, emo kid. Says he started doing musical theater at age ten. Cut kid pics. He's like the kids in my theater group growing up. Could mean he is good. Could mean he is a pompous ass. Paula: "He's been in the cast of 'Wicked'". Adam: "Yeah, for the past year and a half."
Oh. That means a professional cast, not amateur. That means he can sing. Legitimately sing. It is safe to listen. (And, he didn't brag about his professional experience. So, not a pompous ass. That's good.)
"Mamaaaaaa, just killed a man......" ..... WHAT??? WHAT IS THIS? What a beautiful voice. THIS GUY CAN SANG! He just stands there centered, calm, still, opens his mouth and this beautiful tone and wonderful control pour out.
And the judges are arguing whether to put him thru???????? PUT HIM THRU AND SEND THE REST HOME. HE'S YOUR GUY. Never before been so impressed with an Idol audition.
And thus began a wonderful journey. As disgusted as I have been with Idol since then, I will always be grateful to the producers who went against their normal casting route and let Adam go thru.

Hoping we get some Adam mentions by Nile and maybe see Adam on it too! Keith Caulfield @keith_caulfield 18m Incredibly, I'll be interviewing the legendary @nilerodgers for a @billboard @google Hangout this Thursday! www.billboard.com/articles/events/grammys-2014/5876766/billboard-nile-rodgers-grammy-week-google-hangout-watch-jan-23 …
Billboard’s Nile Rodgers GRAMMY Week Google+ Hangout: Watch Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m. ET
Rodgers will share new music and chat with fans -- and a few very special guests -- during this exclusive online event
Just a few days before his much-anticipated GRAMMY Awards performance with Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder, legendary songwriter, producer and guitarist Nile Rodgers will take the spotlight in Billboard's Google+ Hangout, which you can watch right here, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 23 beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET.
56th GRAMMY Awards: Full Coverage
Rodgers will sit down with Billboard's associate director of charts Keith Caulfield (@keith_caulfield) for a live video interview that will feature the premiere of his new single, "Do What You Wanna Do," as well as visits from some of the famous faces Nile's worked with during his illustrious career. Rodgers will also engage with his fans during the exclusive chat. To submit a question, simply log in to Google+, go to Billboard's event page, and click the small Q&A icon at the top right of the video. Select the green “Ask a new question” button to post a question of your own, and don’t forget to +1 your favorites to bump them to the top! We'll also be taking questions for Nile via Twitter. Just tweet to @billboard using the hashtag #NileHangout.
There is, of course, plenty to talk about with Nile, as the past year has been a huge one for the 61-year-old musician. "Get Lucky," his collaboration with Daft Punk, is nominated for record of the year and best pop duo/group performance GRAMMY Awards. Rodgers also laid down licks for "Lay Me Down," a funky track from Avicii's chart-topping 2013 album 'True.'
But, Rodgers' work goes much further back than his collabs with EDM icons. After performing in the house band at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theatre, Rodgers went on to co-found iconic disco group Chic, who scored some of the biggest hits of the '70s with songs like "Le Freak" and "Good Times." Rodgers has also made a name for himself as one of music's most in-demand producers, having worked with a slew of legendary artists such as Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, The B-52's, Diana Ross and many more.
So be sure to bookmark this page and come back on Thursday (Jan. 23) at 4:30 p.m. ET to watch our entire Google+ Hangout with Nile Rodgers as he discusses his celebrated past and his exciting plans for the future.
