There are 89 days until Chicago…so I thought I would start a countdown. And since I am counting down to the Queen + Adam Lambert Tour!! What could be betterer than possible songs for Queen and Adam to perform in concert?

Assuming they change out a few songs during the tour, and do 22 – 24 unique songs a night (excluding the guitar and drum solos), there could be around 30 songs performed in these concerts. And hopefully, I get a lot of them in my countdown. But that won’t be easy -- the Queen catalog is so big, the potential cover list is almost a universe, and there is a chance that they could also decide to perform an Adam song.

#89 “Lily of the Valley” (1974)
Written by Freddie Mercury. Recorded in 1974, released in 1974.

“Lily of the Valley” is brief, only 1:43, but has a beautiful melody and lyrics. Queen never performed this song in concert and I really doubt they ever will, but I really would like to hear Adam sing this with Queen. It is one of Freddie’s compositions that seem to stress him vocally by being in such a high key. Since Freddie composed it and sang all the vocals, it clearly was intended but I would prefer to hear this song in a lower key.

"Lily of the Valley" was on Queen’s third studio album Sheer Heart Attack (1974). "Lily of the Valley" was released as the B-side of “Now I’m Here” and “Keep Yourself Alive” the following year in 1975.

This song was written by Freddie Mercury.

It is one of guitarist Brian May's favorite songs by Freddie.

The lyrics include a reference to "Seven Seas of Rhye" in the line "messenger from Seven Seas has flown to tell the King of Rhye he's lost his throne". The kingdom of Rhye is an imaginary land that Freddie and his sister created when they were children.

The song is believed to be about Le Lys dans la vallée (1835) by Honoré de Balzac. Le Lys dans la vallée (The Lily of the Valley) is a poetic novel about impossible love. It concerns the affection — emotionally vibrant but never consummated — between Felix de Vandenesse, cadet of an aristocratic family, and Henriette de Mortsauf, the virtuous wife of Count Mortsauf, a dark and violent man.

Freddie loved French novels and the French language and many of the songs he composed (e.g. "Killer Queen," "Let Me Entertain You," and "Seaside Rendezvous") contain French expressions.

“Neptune of the seas” is a reference to Roman god of freshwater and the sea, the Roman counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. Poseidon was connected to the horse since the earliest times, well before any connection of him with the sea was attested, and may even have originally been conceived under equine form.

“my kingdom for a horse” is from Richard III by William Shakespeare. At the battle of Bosworth Field, Lord Stanley (who is also Richmond's stepfather) and his followers desert Richard's side, whereupon Richard calls for the execution of George Stanley, Lord Stanley's son. This does not happen, as the battle is in full swing, and Richard is left at a disadvantage. Richard is soon unhorsed on the field at the climax of the battle, and cries out, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" Richmond kills Richard in the final duel. Subsequently, Richmond succeeds to the throne as Henry VII, and marries Princess Elizabeth from the House of York.

“Serpent of the Nile” is usually a reference to Cleopatra. I cannot find any explanation of the phrase from Freddie or anyone else who would know.
