Talon's Take on the Countdown:
Lily Of The Valley
Written by: Freddie Mercury
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, piano
Brian May - guitars
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums
- The last of Freddie's mythological world of Rhye! It seems he cloaked a real life song of needing to escape in a fantasy world, but the passion in it is just amazing.
- This song has never been performed live...at least not by any Queen incarnation or member.
QUOTES:
- "Freddie’s stuff was so heavily cloaked, lyrically. But you could find out, just from little insights, that a lot of the more meaningful stuff was not very accessible. Lily Of The Valley was utterly heartfelt. It’s about looking at his girlfriend and realizing that his body needed to be somewhere else. It’s a great piece of art, but it’s the last song that would ever be a hit.” – Brian May – Mojo - 1999
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
SINGLE VERSION
- NOT essential listening
- Edit starts by fading in from Flick Of The Wrist.
US SINGLE VERSION
- NOT essential listening but nice.
- Complete standalone created when it was put on the B-Side of the Keep Yourself Alive re-release in 1975.
DIGITAL MASTER SAMPLER EDIT
- NOT essential listening.
- From the previously mentioned Digital Master Sampler from 1994. This edit fades in with the 'baby you've been had' from Flick Of The Wrist and also with the ending rumble of In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited. Kind of a strange edit.
PERSONAL NOTES:
- A beautiful track with some great vocals and passion from Mr. Mercury. I know it's short but it should have been put into a medley somewhere...In fact I'd like to see a Queen short song medley with Nevermore, this song, and Dear Friends amongst others!

I am forever searching high and low
But why does everyone tell me no
Neptune of the seas an answer for me please
The lily of the valley doesn't know
I lie in wait with open eyes
I carry on through stormy skies
I follow every course my kingdom for a horse
But each time I grow old
Serpent of the Nile relieve me for a while
And cast me from your spell and let me go
Messenger from seven seas has flown
To tell the king of Rhye he's lost his throne
Wars will never cease
Is there time enough for peace?
The lily of the valley doesn't know
But why does everyone tell me no
Neptune of the seas an answer for me please
