Q3 I tried quoting your previous post, but couldn't get out of your box. Anyway, in your previous post you mentioned that Adam uses instagram because he has a deal with them.. I don't recall anything being said about this before.. did I miss something? It was when IG was a start-up. The used promo dollars to get celebrities to use it. It is the Twitter model (Twitter paid CNN to use Twitter and promote it on TV when they were a start up.) That is why "overnight" there were so many celebrities using IG -- including Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Snoop Dogg. I will find the reference it is old -- like 2010 or 2011. When I was looking for it (and not finding it), I found this funny one about Beiber from July 21, 2011 -- they did not reach out to him to get him to use Instagram. techcrunch.com/2011/07/21/biebergram/**** I just stumbled upon a cool article that fits today's conversation...it is about the top money making songs. Here is the list....and I never would have guessed #3 was even on the list!! I left in a few of the more interesting stories but the money is 10. Mel Torme – "The Christmas Song" (1944). Estimated earnings: $19 million.
9. Roy Orbison & Bill Dees – "Oh Pretty Woman" (1964). Estimated earnings: $19.75 million
8. Sting – "Every Breath You Take" (1983). Estimated earnings: $20.5 millionSting's classic song about an unhealthy obsession with a lost love, was one of the biggest hits of 1983 having spent eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard ranked "Every Breath You Take" at #25 on their list of the top 100 songs of all time. In 1997, the song received a huge re-boot in popularity when Puff Daddy released his cover tribute to the late rapper Notorious BIG "I'll Be Missing You". Diddy's version would go on to win a Grammy and become one of the best selling singles of all time with more 7 million copies sold worldwide. In 2010, Sting's former business manager claimed that this song is responsible for more than 1/4 of all the singer's lifetime publishing income and today still produces $2000 a day ($730,000 per year) in royalties income for Sting. Songwriting for "Every Breath You Take" is credited 100% to Sting (AKA Gordon Sumner). When Diddy produced his version, he forgot to ask for permission first which allowed Sting to demand and receive an unheard of 100% of the remix's publishing royalties (the standard would have been 25-50%). Interestingly, the only part of the original Police song that Diddy actually sampled was Andy Summer's guitar riff. Neither Sting's vocals nor Stewart Copeland's drum can be heard anywhere on "I'll Be Missing You". Because Sting is listed as the sole composer, Summers did not receive a dime in royalties from P Diddy and was not even consulted for his blessing. In fact, Summers was not even aware of the song until his son heard it on the radio. In a recent interview, Andy Summers called Puff Daddy's song "the major rip-off of all time". Furthermore, he elaborated: "He actually sampled my guitar, and that's what he based his whole track on. Stewart's not on it. Sting's not on it. I'd be walking round Tower Records, and the fucking thing would be playing over and over. It was very bizarre while it lasted." 7. Haven Gillespie & Fred J Coots – "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" (1934). Estimated earnings: $25 million
6. Ben E King, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller – "Stand By Me" (1961). Estimated earnings: $27 million
5. Alex North & Hy Zaret – "Unchained Melody" (1955). Estimated earnings: $27.5 millionOriginally penned as the theme for a little known 1955 prison movie "Unchained", this song would eventually become one of the most covered songs in recorded history. Since 1955, "Unchained Melody" has been covered by more than 650 different artists. The most famous cover is the 1965 version by The Righteous Brothers which, like many songs on this list, received a major boost in popularity when it was used in the 1990 Demi Moore/Patrick Swayze Oscar winning film "Ghost". 4. John Lennon and Paul McCartney – "Yesterday" (1965). Estimated earnings: $30 million
3. Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Phil Specter – "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin" (1964). Estimated earnings: $32 millionHusband and wife songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote this song with legendary producer (and convicted murderer) Phil Specter. Specter insisted, against the couple's wishes, that they add the now famous line "and he is gone, gone, gone, Whoa, whoa, whoa". Similar to the #5 song on this list, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin" became a massive hit after it was covered by The Righteous Brothers. It also received a massive re-boot in popularity as part of the soundtrack to the 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun". The song would eventually be covered by more than 2200 different artists around the world and become the most played song in radio history. 2. Irving Berlin – "White Christmas" (1940). Estimated earnings: $36 million
1.Hill Sisters – "Happy Birthday" (1893). Estimated earnings: $50 million

I also remember after FYE in an interview Adam said he wanted to have more singles like WWFM, and wanted to work with Max again. So maybe RCA didn't want to spend that much money to pay Max and no big budget to promote his single with the radio.
Its all about how much money labels ar. willing to put into promo of a single. The whole TP era was weird, releasing a single in November after being out almost two years, in the holiday freeze. Then promotion of Btikm on Leno and Ellen is hardly gonna make an impact. They even had that poll for lead single, Cuckoo wan by a Landslide, yet they went in another direction, what was the point of that. And when TP got released to radio, i dont even Adam performed it on US tv. Cuckoo and Runnin both should of bn singles. Also too as good as Trespassing (album) was it was really in a female dominated genre, its trends though is the current trends your now presently seeing in music. Tbh though i think your seeing a shift in change in music from EDM to Alt music, so maybe MM, Adam, and Co well build on that. Great point in your last sentence, 3ku1. I'm wondering if Max Martin is seeing that pop music is possibly leaving EDM and doesn't want to left behind, so he may be interested in working with someone like Adam who can go in a more Alt direction. Or, maybe he just wants to explore a new direction.

MM only works with artists who are either signed to a major label, beleives in the artists vision and their music, so wants to promote it to radio, and beleives that artist is capable of becoming a superstar on the lvl of Perry,Gaga, Timberlake etc. Im sure the fact MM also likes Adam is a plus, but having an all star writing team guareentees this single well be supported by radio, Adam just didnt have this support last era, thats the difference to me. Part of it is a buisness, and MM clearly beleives Adam can garner him another hit.

I do not think it was a matter of money for Trespassing. That album had a big production budget. Just read the credits. Pharrell Williams on two tracks, Oliver Goldstein, Bonnie McKee, etc. No it was probably not money. Might be that RCA has a big deal with Dr. Luke who got the first two singles on Trespassing. RCA was trying for a sure, safe bet. Not sure why they went to Dr. Luke who produced FYE vs. Max Martin who was responsible for WWFM and IIHY. All I can come up with was they had paid him a ton of money and he was hot at the time. Not as hot now. I know it takes a village to put out an album but I hope Adam has as much if not more say in which songs he wants released as singles. After all it's his name on the line and he's not that kid from idol anymore that needs all this advice on how to break in. From everything I read here when Trespassing was released it seems the singles were chosen by others and not what Adam would have chosen. Do we really know this or were we guessing?

Well you hear alot if Adam hasent breaked now, at 30 he never well. Which is not really true, imo he made it at 26 (same age as katy and gaga), when he was on idol, got a Top Ten Billboard hit, a grammy nomination, Ama performance love or hate it is iconic, made a massive impact on one of the most succesfull tv shows ever Glee, and is frontman for arguably the greatest band ever. I think hes made it haha, while he may not be swift, gaga lvl etc. Their are alot of aspiring singers in LA, and Globally who would kill for that kind of success. You could argue Lambert and Gaga have similar backgrounds, difference is she had a following and fanbase before she was signed. She was as was perry who was dropped by three labels before she made it, seen as a struggling artist who finally got a break. Where as while Adam is the exception, their is a misconception that people use singing shows as a fast track to success, so they diddnt work for their success, but as everyone knows his job was singing. I think though while its great Adam has an all star team behind him, he needs support that backs his artistic vision, problem is he can do any genre so its hard to market him.

"He only works with an artist when he has a guarantee that 1. he gets a single, and 2. that single will be promoted, and 3. the single will have a big label behind it -- ie Sony or UMG global distribution. Not possible! Just not." Sorry not quoting Q3 correctly above but just curious, when WWFM was a Pink discard, was it ok because she had other Max Martin songs already that were singles and she didn't need that one? And RCA parked it until they could place it with someone else? So MM got WWFM and IIHY out, and would have with RCA, whether with Adam or not. It's a big step that this time they'll write for him and with him. If I recall, Pink had a real personal problem with the song because she wrote the lyrics about another guy she was with in the time span between her divorce and her remarriage to her ex-husband Carey. She didn't want the song on her album, because she and Carey were in the process of working things out (my timing could be off) and the song was a sore spot. So the reason for the discard wasn't that the song itself was bad. Just a really bad song for Pink at the time.

I don't recall anything being said about this before.. did I miss something? I always have trouble getting out of the quote box when I am using the Google Chrome browser on my laptop. Anyone know why? No problems when using Firefox but I prefer to use Chrome. Anyone know why? I occasionally have the same problem with IE as well. What I usually do is click on the "BBCode" tab, then manually put my cursor to the right of the "[ / quote ]" notation. I'll then type a word or two before clicking back to "Preview" tab and typing the rest of my message from there.

Guarantee for radio play? Q3 I remember talking to you, you mentioned that when BTIKM was released, the stations did not warm up to it. Therefore, little play Maybe 'cause RCA no payola???? SOmeone said, play a song enough times, and it becomes a hit. This really never had a chance. What will be different this time if the radio again does not like MM single they have chosen??? The label will be different! The label can do lots of things with their money that are just short of payola! RCA is cheap & doesn't do it! Q3 can give you many examples, I am sure.
