Re "One" - I felt it was very hard to smoothly get the range of emotion he wanted into the tiny amount of time contestants were given, so I don't think I really loved it. But the studio recording is definitely one of my favorites. Is it the studio recordings that will be the Best Of?

But the studio recording is definitely one of my favorites. Is it the studio recordings that will be the Best Of? I would think it is the studio recording. I bought all of those when they were on iTunes. Although the live performances have a certain life and excitement, the studio recordings gave Adam time to unfold all the gloriousness of each song. Anyway, who wants a song that is 1:30? Too short.

I didn't see any Adam mention in the article. Perhaps it's in the video? The video is, as usual, geo-blocked so could you tell what was said? I see that Belle already got there first. I do think it is true though, many people tend to go easier on foreigners that are invited guests, so it is actually xenophelia to some degree, or even more appropriate, the attempt to avoid any possible impression of xenophobia and the tendency to therefore over-compensate. But I think, it is also a bit misleading. Because outside of the media, who may react that way to a stranger, the rest of the country is still going to react just as homophobic in their attitudes, or just as opposed to any androgynous appearance, as they are with their own peers, they are just not going to say it loud. They will just ignore the artist. So, showing how they looked may still have been risky. But people already had fallen in love with some of their hits, and so I guess, it worked out at the time. Also, as much as we all realize today that somebody is likely to be gay, if dressed and behaving in this manner, at the time of Culture Club, this was just not the case. Many people just did not make the connection, no matter how much that is astounding to us today. So, he never had to deal with being out and gay in the music business, like Adam did from the get-go. He acted like they all did at the time, as outrageous as he wanted to (which was still very brave, to say the least), but he never responded to any questions regarding his sexuality, which was just the way things were done at that time. Btw, the fact that his recording career was cut short, was mostly related to drug related issues, not homophobia. However these two may be connected on a personal level, from a public standpoint, they were separate until the 2000s. I think, each artist (BG as well as AL) is representing for their time and kicking the ball forward. They just encounter different scenarios. Adam has certainly benefited from the fact that somebody like BG has paved that way, and now he is continuing. Clearly both artists appreciate each other both in person and in their public stance that they take. Nice shoutout from Boy George.
