As already mentioned they over-extended coverage here in the North East (and neglected the South and many parts of the Midwest). But, as Lacyrose described for Chicago, in similar ways, New Jersey and PHL could be sold out by more effective marketing. I assume that billboards will still go up, as we get closer and newspaper ads will pop up too.
It is hard to reach people who are 'fans', but express their fandom only by playing old vinyls/CDs in their own living rooms. Five years ago, I was such a hard to reach 'fan', who missed cultural information left and right. We all are busy people who are trying to hinder marketers from flooding our inboxes. But public displays do work, and I hope they happen for those venues that are not sold out.
Atlantic City worries me. Atlantic City is a town where people arrive on Saturday for a week and then try to find things to do at night. Any day, but Saturday, I would not be worried about selling out the concert short term to the local crowds of that week. The demographic is right. But given the horrendous traffic on Saturday to get there, folks are looking for things to do from Sunday onwards. A Saturday concert you cannot sell to the arriving crowd, who are tired and cranky. And the leaving crowd is already gone, and will leave town regretting what they will miss. Because they are going to know about it. AC is very good about advertising their local events. Last year, when I was there, I could have to told you exactly which acts were in town, and I am not normally all that attentive to such information.
But Saturday night, is a difficult one.
Oh, and for all those going to that concert: DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE DOWN ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON!
I am serious. You get to about 20 miles outside of AC and then you sit there on that freeway til 10 pm. I had no concert to go to, but once I got stuck, I left the freeway which was totally free until that 20 mile marker, but then had suddenly turned into this parking lot, and started using back-roads. They are busy too, but we made it to AC around 9:30 pm. If I had had a concert to go to, I would have missed it. The way it was, I only had whining kids in backrow to contend with.
Found out from locals, that this is a weekly event there. If you can arrive Friday, please do.
I guess, I will swing over the the AC thread and drop this info there too.
