The strange economics of the music business
5.18.14 by Q3
A funny thing has happened, the price of an album has plummeted while the price of concert tickets has skyrocketed! This means that artists need to tour to make money – and it seems that everyone is on tour.
In the 1920’s, the music business was based on the sale of sheet music. That’s why songwriters still get the lions’ share of royalties.
Radio and records killed the sheet music business but it took 30 years.
In the 1950’s radio, single record sales and jukebox revenue were most important.
In the 1970’s disco propelled album sales to new heights and then the arrival of CD’s in 1982 continued the trend.
In the late 1990’s, digital music gained momentum and people started to “share” music via the internet. Add in Napster (1999), iTunes (2000), MySpace (2003), YouTube (2005), etc. And the music business was in total freefall. Legal music prices continue to fall, and sales have plummeted. And artists and musicians have hit the road to earn a living. It is a new world, only suitable for the brave.

In August, Paul McCartney’s Out There! Tour hits Candlestick Park and the general aRollindmission tickets are priced from $49 to $150 the concert is expected to sell out and the secondary market for this tickets is very hot. In 1966 The Beatles played their final stadium concert at Candlestick Park and tickets were $3.80 to $7.... and they didn’t sell out.
Even adjusted for inflation, the $7 ticket in 1966 would only be $51.22.
The Beatles in 1966 were getting $5.00 for most of their concerts (that is $36.59 today). And they were doing radio promos!!
The Doors in 1967, $4.00, $4.50 at the door. (Yes, there were tickets at the door!)
The Rolling Stones in 1978, general admission $12.50 which adjusted for inflation is $45.45.
Grateful Dead in 1978, $7.50 which adjusted for inflation is $27.27.
Fast forward to 1984, and ticket prices for some of the biggest artists were affordable but heading up.
Elton John 1984 was $18.50 which adjusted for inflation is $42.21

Def Leppard 1993, $21.75, in 2014 dollars $35.68.

Then in the mid-1990’s the ticket prices start to increase rapidly. Pink Floyd in 1994 (a very expensive ticket for the time), $41.25 which adjusted for inflation is $118.68.
And ticket prices have continued to rise….so for 2014…. excluding all the VIP packages and Ear-view stage seats! ....here are ticket prices for a few Madison Square Garden's upcoming concerts:
Bruno Mars $54 to $181.
Katy Perry $29 to $191.
Sara Bareilles $40 to $92.
Billy Joel $64 to $184.
The History of the Eagles $49 to $227.
Queen + Adam Lambert $59 - $171.
Records…..more than vinyl is dead!
In the meantime, back at the record store…..there is a permanent closed sign. It is almost impossible to make money selling physical music.
That is because the price of music is so low, and there are so many alternative ways to get music. Here’s a chart compiled by the RIAA.
And check out the price of CD and digital albums today.

The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
5.18.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 32 days to go!
#32 “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” (1974)
Written by Freddie Mercury.
Released on A Night at the Opera on November 21, 1975.
I chose this song for today because it is time to take a break, and enjoy Sunday. No, QAL aren’t going to perform this song.
On "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" Freddie played piano and did all of the vocals. The lead vocal was sung in the studio and reproduced through headphones in a tin bucket elsewhere in the studio. A microphone picked up the sound from the bucket, which gives it a hollow "megaphone" sound. The guitar solo is also reported to have been recorded on the vocal track, as there were no more tracks to record on, as explained by producer Roy Thomas Baker during the 'Classic Albums' documentary. The key change going into the guitar solo (Eb to A) is a tritone relationship, making it a jarring, but very effective, transition into the key of E minor for the next track, "I'm in Love with My Car".
Personnel
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, piano
Brian May - guitars
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums
Produced by: Queen and Roy Thomas Baker

Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon
I go out to work on Monday morning
Tuesday I go off to honeymoon
I'll be back again before it's time for sunnydown
I'll be lazing on a Sunday afternoon
Bicycling on every Wednesday evening
Thursday I go waltzing to the Zoo
I come from London town
I'm just an ordinary guy
Fridays I go painting in the Louvre
I'm bound to be proposing on a Saturday night
(There he goes again)
I'll be lazing on a Sunday lazing on a Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday afternoon
"That's the way the mood takes me. Y'know... that's just one aspect of me, and I can really change. Everything on 'Sunday Afternoon' is something that... I'm really, I'm really sort of, I really... well, I love doing the vaudeville side of things. It's quite a sort of test... I love writing things like that and I'm sure I'm going to do more than that... It's quite a challenge."
Freddie Mercury - 21/5/1976, Record Mirror
But if they chose to perform this song, yes, indeed, Adam could do it -- with style!
And just because this performance has a bit of Vaudeville in it…..”Strut” from the Glam Nation Tour.
