Q with Crown Tattoo

By now most people reading this page have seen Adam’s new tattoo.

When I look at this new tattoo, it just makes me smile. I do not need Adam to tweet the meaning of this tattoo, the pride and respect just shows.
And the pride has been earned by the way Adam has taken on the daunting task of singing for Queen, of balancing respect for Queen, Freddie and their music with his own musical vision and interpretation. Giving us music that is simultaneously true to the original and yet somehow new. Not an imitation; not a reinvention. To strike this balance is a trick that few could actually do.
Freddie, Brian, Roger and John moved from genre to genre – sometimes within the same song – often befuddling critics and some of their own fans. They were at the core a rock band but only about half of their recorded tracks are rock tracks. Some of their songs defy genre classification or require triple hyphenation. Queen would not be contained by genre limits and even by the somewhat limited imagination of the music critics.

It was a marriage that seemed meant to be from the first time they performed together, almost exactly 5 years ago.
So back to that tattoo. The Q with the crown is composed of two elements of the Queen Crest – the Q and a simplified version of the crown. The Queen Crest was designed by Freddie Mercury shortly before the release of their first album. The logo features the zodiac signs of all four members: two lions for Leo (Deacon and Taylor), a crab for Cancer (May), and two fairies for Virgo (Mercury). The lions are embracing a stylized letter Q, the crab is resting atop the Q with flames rising directly above it, and the fairies are each sheltering below a lion. There is also a crown inside the Q and the whole logo is over-shadowed by an enormous phoenix.

Hmmmm, new Q tattoo looks like it might have a little of the new Q logo w/AL's name on it. Very cool interpretation: pic.twitter.com/Cime3jsWV2
The whole symbol bears a passing resemblance to the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, particularly with the lion supporters. The original logo, as found on the reverse-side of the first album cover, was a simple line drawing but more intricate colour versions were used on later album covers.
It is a Q, a circle, a full-circle, but with more – the continuation, the tail of that Q.

Interesting Adam bits…
Here’s one from an article about Reality TV Programs….
Producers of “The Voice” correctly note that their winners still have some time, but so far that show has spawned no stars to match Underwood or Kelly Clarkson or even Adam Lambert — and part of the reason certainly lies in the fact that they had less buzz to draw on. Fewer viewers got to know them over multiple weeks on television.

‘He is so theatrical, a true diva’: Queen’s Roger Taylor says Adam Lambert shows would thrill Freddie Mercury
youtu.be/ehTyiFH_Fwc
As Queen enters the final weeks of preparation for its initial American tour alongside Adam Lambert, band co-founder Roger Taylor wants to make clear that they are not trying to replace Freddie Mercury. Having spent so long working with the late singer, Taylor isn’t sure that’s even possible.
Still, Queen has stayed busy in the years since Mercury’s passing from AIDS-related complications more than two decades ago.
Taylor, who has continued Queen with guitarist Brian May after the death of Mercury and the retirement of bassist John Deacon, returns to the U.S. for a series of shows beginning on June 19, 2014 in Chicago. Queen and Lambert made their long-awaited American concert debut, after appearing several times together in Europe since 2009, during last September’s iHeart Radio music event in Las Vegas. Taylor and May earlier appeared with Paul Rodgers, George Michael and others since Mercury’s passing.
“When Brian and I give concerts as a Queen, we don’t want anyone to imitate Freddie — because no one can replace him for us,” Taylor tells the German site Bluewin. “That would be the wrong message. Adam Lambert is an independent artist. It fits us perfectly, because he is so theatrical, a true diva. Freddie would love him!”
Mercury, it seems, is never far from their thoughts. Taylor says he thinks of him “every day, at least once. It is, for Brian and me, part of our lives and our infrastructure. We stood together so closely for so many years.”

The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
5.19.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 31 days to go!
#31 “Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to......” (1975)
Written by Freddie Mercury.
Released on A Night at the Opera on November 21, 1975.
"'Death On Two Legs' was the most vicious
lyric I ever wrote. It's so vindictive that Brian felt bad singing it. I
don't like to explain what I was thinking when I wrote a song. I think
that's awful, just awful. When I'm dead, I want to be remembered as a
musician of some worth and substance."

Freddie Mercury - 17/03/1977, Circus Magazine
This is one of the most interesting Queen tracks. It is very complex composition and I think underrated. IMO it is one of Brian’s best piece of guitar work.
Freddie wrote this song about his former managers, though, to protect himself legally, they were never named. Read the lyrics – this song could be dedicated by many artists to their managers and label bosses.
"Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" has been referred to as Freddie Mercury's hate letter towards Queen's ex-manager, Norman Sheffield. Sheffield was reputed to have mistreated the band and abused his role as their manager from 1972 to 1975. Though the song never made a direct reference to Sheffield, when he heard a playback of the song at Trident Studios during the time of album release, he was appalled and sued the band and the record label for defamation which resulted in an out of court settlement, and this later revealed to the public his connection to the song.
Sheffield denied the charges of financial abuse in his 2013 autobiography "Life on Two Legs: Set The Record Straight" and referred to copies of the original 1972 Queen management contracts between Sheffield and Queen included in the book as proof to back up his defense.
In the Classic Albums documentary about the making of A Night at the Opera, Brian May stated that the band at first was somewhat taken aback by the incisiveness of Mercury's lyrics and described by Mercury as being, "so vindictive that Brian felt bad singing it." After the song came together, it was agreed that the "author should have his way", and the song went on as written.
As with "Bohemian Rhapsody", most of the guitar parts on this song were initially played on piano by Mercury, to demonstrate to May how they needed to be played on guitar.
I think it is unlikely that "Death on Two Legs" will be played during the QAL Tour but it is possible that the piano intro could be slipped in somewhere.

“Death on Two Legs” Live
During live performances, Mercury would usually rededicate the song to "a real motherfucker of a gentleman", although this line was censored on the version that appeared on their Live Killers album in 1979. "Death on Two Legs" remained on the setlist until, and well into, The Game Tour in 1980, then was dropped. The piano introduction though was played through the Hot Space and Works tours.

“Death on Two Legs” Lyrics
youtu.be/E0xc7TD6s7A
Death on Two Legs
You suck my blood like a leech
You break the law and you preach
Screw my brain till it hurts
You've taken all my money
And you want more
Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
With your narrow minded cronies
Who are fools of the first division
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart of your own
Kill joy bad guy big talking small fry
You're just an old barrow boy
Have you found a new toy to replace me?
Can you face me?
But now you can kiss my ass goodbye
Feel good are you satisfied?
Do you feel like suicide?
(I think you should)
Is your conscience all right
Does it plague you at night?
Do you feel good feel good?
You talk like a big business tycoon
You're just a hot air balloon
So no-one gives you a damn
You're just an overgrown schoolboy
Let me tan your hide
A dog with disease
You're the king of the 'sleaze'
Put your money where your mouth is
Mister know-all
Was the fin on your back
Part of the deal? (Shark)
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart (you never did) of your own
(Right from the start)
Insane you should be put inside
You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void
Make me feel good I feel good
