Queen+Adam Lambert Isn't An Insult To Freddie Mercury
Queen’s first Australian tour since 1985 might just be an excuse for a giant arena karaoke version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – but it’s not an insult to the memory of Freddie Mercury.
Since Mercury’s death in 1991 a choir of singers including David Bowie, Robbie Williams and Elton John have tried and (predictably) failed to replace the legendary singer. Someone at the London Olympics even thought Jessie J would work as a lead singer. At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 Robert Plant, Liza Minnelli and Metallica’s James Hetfield all gave it a go and Axl Rose even turned up in a kilt to wail his way through ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. None of them were Freddie Mercury.
Adam Lambert isn’t Freddie Mercury either – but if Queen are going to tour in 2014 he’s a more than decent substitute. It’s not easy to replace a Wembley Arena filling superstars of the ‘80s – just ask INXS and JD Fortune – but Lambert makes sense as a frontman for Queen. He has the vocal range, attitude and the flamboyant sense of style. As drummer Roger Taylor has said: “Adam is the most incredible frontman. He’s a great diva, and I mean that in the best possible way. We need that theatrically.”
Rather than following the low-road to fame like Fortune, Lambert didn’t set out to front a cash-grab reunion tour. He made his way as a solo act in his own right and has released two solo albums since his American Idol success. According to Forbes, he pocketed a cool $5 million last year and will release a third solo record – the follow-up to 2012’s favourably received Trespassing – later this year. Touring with Queen isn’t going to hurt him but it’s not like it’s his only option – he could probably front a Led Zeppelin tour as well.

Idol Memories

On this day in KISSTORY - May 20, 2009, #KISS rocked @americanidol finale show performing with @adamlambert!
and Rickey Minor made some wonderful comments about Adam in the following article:
‘American Idol’ Bandleader Rickey Minor on His Favorite Performance and What It Takes to Win
Ahead of Wednesday’s American Idol finale, longtime bandleader Rickey Minor shares the secrets to a great contestant and the stories behind his favorite ‘Idol’ moments.
Adam's parts:
Do you remember the Idol contestants from the past that you saw those things in them the second they arrived?
That’s an easy one for me: Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry, David Cook. You know who else? Jordin Sparks.
You brought up David Cook and Adam Lambert earlier. How did the show change when contestants like them came on, who were big into changing arrangements, so that the show seemed to no longer be about who’s the best at singing a karaoke version of Celine Dion songs?
There’s the artistry. Those guys learned to tap into their own artistry, what kind of artist they’d be if they got record deals. I’m not even talking about the competition anymore. I’m talking about a career as a recording artist. Those guys took the challenge when the show allowed them to play instruments and do those other things. So a guy like Phillip Phillips wouldn’t have won in the earlier days if he couldn’t have his guitar. Like John Mayer, he’s not a stand-up singer. He’s a singer-songwriter, but he’s a musician. So his comfort is to play.
It’s funny that around the same time the Adam Lamberts and the David Cooks started doing well on the show was right around the same time you could sense a fatigue from viewers: Can we really hear another girl sing another version of “I Have Nothing”?
They’re still singing that song! Some of them still do—on this show and on those other vocal competition shows. It’s funny; they always go to these big torch songs when they’re not the best choice. The songs are overdone. So we’re trying to promote more things. This year we’ve done more indie things. Or we’ve done popular songs but encouraged contestants to make them their own. There’s a risk in that, because you don’t want to change it so much that people are like, “What song was that?”
Rickey Minor’s Favorite American Idol Performances
Adam Lambert—“Mad World”
That vocal was just really beautiful. Adam would always email me. I would open up my computer and there were three or four emails from Adam between the time I left rehearsal and the time I got home. He was so wanting to communicate. Now, they all had my email and they all used it. But he used it. So he had ideas, and that made me come with more ideas. So if he had one idea, I would come with three, just to push him.

Gene Simmons @genesimmons 4h
@dcheatem --MAYBE – MAYBE NOT – BUT WHY DID QUEEN GET HIM TO BE THEIR LEAD SINGER?
Dewey Cheatem @dcheatem 4h
@genesimmons No one can replace Freddie Mercury just like no one can replace you or Paul or Ace or Peter.
Gene SimmonsVerified account @genesimmons
@dcheatem --THAT IS NOT THE POINT AND YOU KNOW IT. YOU SAID THE KID HAD NO TALENT. I asked you, then why did Queen get him as lead singer.

#33 “Ogre Battle” (1974)/”Bring Back That Leroy Brown” (1974)
Written by Freddie Mercury.
Released on Sheer Heart Attack on November 8, 1974
“….and Freddie’s vaudevillian streak finally emerged (“Bring Back That Leroy Brown”).”
BBC review, Chris Jones, 2007. www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/xxhj
Queen with jangle piano and ukulele?? Seriously? Well yes.
"Bring Back That Leroy Brown" features Freddie on most of the vocals adjusting the tape speed to make it sound really low in the harmonies, as well as Freddie on grand piano and jangle piano.
"The ukulele was incidental to that because it that was Freddie's song. It had this kind of vaudeville atmosphere and I just thought the ukulele would go nicely on it and we worked beside it, so it could be done. And I managed to fiddle a little ukulele solo."
Brian May - 24/12/1977, BBC Radio One
Let me start off by saying, Queen is just not going to perform this song – at least not in the US.
Personnel
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, piano, jangle piano
Brian May - guitars, George Formby ukulele-banjo
John Deacon - bass guitar, double bass
Roger Taylor - drums
Produced by: Queen and Roy Thomas Baker
What is a “jangle piano”?
Jangle piano, more commonly known as a tack piano (or junk piano, honky-tonk piano or harpsipiano) is a permanently altered version of an ordinary piano, in which tacks or nails are placed on the felt-padded hammers of the instrument at the point where the hammers hit the strings, giving the instrument a tinny, more percussive sound. The main reason for modifying a piano in this way is to emulate the song of a poorly maintained piano with aged, compressed felt hammers – the kind of piano one might find in a honky tonk or dive.
Freddie’s most well known use of jangle piano is “Killer Queen” which was also on Sheer Heart Attack. Here is just the jangle piano from “Killer Queen”.

Freddie also played jangle piano on “Seaside Rendezvous”. Here is another very famous example of honky tonk piano.

“Bring Back That Leroy Brown” Live
The song was played live in a different arrangement that shortened the song and was, except for the very end and one other line, purely instrumental. Brian would use his ukulele-banjo only on this song.

Bring Back That Leroy Brown
Bring back bring back bring back that Leroy Brown Yeah!

Took my money out of gratitude
And he git right out of town
Well I gotta getty up steady up shoot him down
Gotta hit that latitude babe
Bring back bring back bring back that Leroy Brown Yeah!
Bring back bring back gotta ring that Leroy Brown Yeah!
Big bad Leroy Brown he got no common sense
No no he got no brains but he sure gotta lot of style
Can't stand no more in this here jail
I gotta rid myself of this sentence
Gotta get out of the heat step into the shade
Gotta get me there dead or alive babe
Woooh woooh big bad Leroy
Woooh woooh woooh woooh
Big bad Leroy Brown
Bring back bring back bring back that Leroy Brown Yeah!
Bring back bring back gotta bring back Leroy Brown Yeah!
Big mama Lulu Belle she had a nervous breakdown
She had a nervous breakdown
Leroy's taken her honey chile away
But she met him down at the station (woooh woooh)
Put a shotgun to his head and unless I be mistaken
This is what she said
Big bad big boy big bad Leroy Brown
I'm gonna get that cutie pie
Bring back bring back bring back that Leroy Brown Yeah!
Big bad caused a mighty fine sensation Yeah Yeah!
Gone and got himself elected President
We want Leroy for President
Next time you gotta hit a bitty baddy weather
This time like a shimmy shammy leather
He's a big boy bad boy Leroy
I don't care where you get him from
Bring that big bad Leroy back
Want him back
The song that inspired “Bring Back That Leroy Brown”
I can see how these two songs are related but the vaudeville style of Queen’s song is really different.
