Did you hear?
Queen + Adam Lambert will be on tour this summer!
EDMONTON - June rhymes with tune, which is fitting for a month chock full of music shows in every permutation: indoors and out, above ground and underground, blinged up and stripped down, spanning the genres, instruments and eras.
Between camping trips and barbecues and summer sandal blister treatments, you might want to consider getting tickets (if any remain!) to a concert, or two, or seven.
….
Queen will be here, too, on June 24 at Rexall, with American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert filling in for deceased frontman Freddie Mercury. It’s an impossibly big pair of shoes to fill, but Lambert, who’s enjoyed major success as a pop artist, has reassured Queen fans he’d never try to copy or mimic Mercury, who is one of his heroes. Lambert’s vocal prowess, flamboyant performance style and dark good looks make it easy to see why the band chose him to interpret Queen tunes.

Some believed that the "Adam" referred to was Adam Lambert, but it is a reference to Adam Hambrick. Adam Hambrick is a songwriter based in Nashville who worked with Kris on the album. The producer Kris referred to is Charlie Peacock, who produced critically acclaimed albums for the Nashville duo, the Civil Wars. Their 2011 debut album, Barton Hollow, reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and sold 800,000 copies. The release won 2 Grammy Awards in 2012–for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

#19 “I Want to Break Free” (1984)
Written by John Deacon.
Released on The Works February 27, 1984 and as a single April 2, 1984 (UK).
The main idea of the song lies in its title which is repeated through the lyrics: "I Want to Break Free". It includes a love theme and the protagonist "has fallen in love", "can't get over the way you love me like you do" and "doesn't want to live alone". Many people perceived the song as an anthem of the fight against oppression.
John, the song's author, insisted he didn't want a guitar solo on the track so a synth solo was played by Mandel – live, however, May played the solo on guitar. The song had three versions: album, single and extended, all with different lengths. The version used for the single and the promotional video includes an opening and instrumental bridge (after the synth solo) not part of the original mix.
Most of the song follows the traditional 12 bar blues progression in E major. It has three verses with one bridge, no chorus and relatively little section repetition.
After its release in 1984 the single of the song was well received all over Europe and South America. It was # 3 and certified gold in the UK, and a top 10 hit in many markets but only reached #45 in the US.
Personnel
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, synthesizer
Brian May - electric guitar

Releases
In addition to being on Queen's 1984 album The Works, “I Want to Break Free” was released as a single in four formats: 7-inch and 12-inch vinyl records and 3-inch and 5-inch CDs.
The album version is 3 minutes 20 seconds long. Its first 6 seconds repeat the basic rhythm played with the drums (Ludwig), an acoustic guitar (Gibson), a bass guitar (Fender) and an electric guitar (Fender Telecaster). This rhythm continues through most of the song, stopping only for its first line. The first verse ends at 0:37 and is followed by a very similar second verse, which is however shorter by one line. A stacked guitar accompaniment (Red Special) appears at the end of the second verse (1:03), and between 1:15 and 1:17 it is replaced by a synthesizer. A synthesizer solo starts at 1:33 that mimics the sound of brass instruments, it is assisted by a guitar. The last verse starts in the second minute, it additionally features a synthesizer and a Fender Stratocaster guitar. The song pauses at the final line "I've got to break free", followed by the fade out. This version was released on the album The Works and on some singles.

The regular single version lasts 4 minutes 21 seconds and differs from the album version by the 40-second introduction and a longer synthesizer solo which starts at 2:33. The introduction is played on an electronic keyboard and is assisted by cymbals, drums and a guitar (Red Special). Otherwise, the composition copies that of the album version.

The extended version lasts 7 minutes 16 seconds and features longer introduction and ending. It lasts until 6:04, and the remaining minute contains fragments of other songs from The Works, namely "Radio Ga Ga", "It's a Hard Life", "Man on the Prowl", "Machines (or "Back to Humans")", "Keep Passing the Open Windows", "Hammer to Fall", "Tear It Up" and "Is This the World We Created ...?". The extended version was mostly distributed as 12-inch vinyl records and then reissued on the CD of The Works in 1991.

“I Want to Break Free” Music Video

This song is best known probably because of its controversial video, featuring all four Queen members dressed up as women, in a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street. The idea for the Coronation Street parody was Rodger's. The second part of the video included a composition rehearsed and performed with the Royal Ballet and choreographed by Wayne Eagling.

Whereas the parody was acclaimed in the UK, it received mixed reviews in other markets. It was banned by MTV in the US. In many parts of the world, the cross dressing was misunderstood. For example, in Rio de Janeiro in 1985. Freddie appeared in front of an audience of 325,000 and started singing "I want to break free", stones were thrown at him. He quickly realized that his female outfit was the reason and removed his wig and false breasts, which calmed down the audience. This incident however puzzled and disappointed the singer.

Upon its release, the video was Queen's most expensive yet - topping even Radio Ga Ga. It proved as popular as the song, but was also the source of a great deal of controversy. The biggest issue was the ballet sequence. Although based on original choreography by Nijinski, Sir Kenneth Macmillan felt that some of Eagling's touches and also the choice of costumes were near identical to pieces in his own ballet, The Rite Of Spring. As a result of this, Queen Productions donated an undisclosed sum to Macmillan's chosen charity, the Institute of Choreology.
Another difficulty was the drag section. Perhaps it was to be expected that a great number of the British press would be outraged by the sight of four men, one of whom was clearly homosexual and very much anti-tabloid, prancing around in women's clothing. That some accused them of corrupting their young fans was more of a surprise - particularly as the fans adored the video.
Roger: "We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought it was time we had some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that."
A further incident occurred in January of 1985, when Queen performed to 250,000 people at 2am, as part of the Rock In Rio festival in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The crowd were phenomenal, and with the band from the offset, until the encore - for which Freddie decided to come back on stage wearing the top half of his 'Break Free' drag outfit - complete with even bigger false breasts than in the video. The audience reacted in a hostile manner, throwing bottles and cans at the stage, causing Freddie to quickly remove the offending items - and the crowd were with the band once again. After the show, Queen learned that the song had become an anthem for liberation in the country, and Brazilian fans, most of whom would never have seen the video on the strictly controlled government television stations, saw the outfit as a mockery of their beliefs.
Despite all the controversy surrounding the video, it has since become one of the most celebrated Queen promos. Originally released as part of The Works EP home video, it was also included on Greatest Flix II and now features on the Greatest Video Hits 2 DVD. It has also become a regular parody piece, recreated by stars ranging from the cast Eastenders (as part of the BBC's annual charity fundraiser 'Children In Need' in 2001) to the famous foxy entertainer Basil Brush!

Footage from the video was later used for the song "The Show Must Go On".

I Want to Break Free
I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows God knows I want to break free
I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love yeah
God knows God knows I've fallen in love
It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free
But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free
I've got to break free
I want to break free yeah
I want I want I want I want to break free....
