2014 Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown
#16 “Tie Your Mother Down” (1976)
Written by: Brian May.
Released on 2014 A Day At The Races December 10, 1976 (UK), December 18, 1976 (US) and as a single in March 1977.
If I was Empress of the Queen + Adam Lambert Tour I would but this song up front as part of an opening Queen rock set. And I would have a 40 song setlist! No matter what, this song will be on the setlist.
This is a song based on a killer opening guitar riff. Brian May started writing the song in Tenerife, Canary Islands, while he was working on his Ph.D. in Astrophysics. He composed the riff on a Spanish guitar and played it while singing "tie your mother down," a line he considered a joke. When Freddie heard the placeholder lyrics, he encouraged Brian to keep the line.
In a BBC Radio 4 tribute program to Rory Gallagher, May stated that a key inspiration for the riff of this song came from Taste's 'Morning Sun' from their On the Boards (1970) album. Taste is an Irish rock and blues band formed in 1966 founded by songwriter and musician Rory Gallagher. Taste was influential and popular in England and Ireland, and they released 2 studio albums but had limed success and broke up in 1970. After they disbanded some of the early recordings were released in a few more albums. They were and remain essentially unknown in the US and Canada.
Mod Note: There are so many YT links on this page they are freezing many members' computers. Q3 is not online, so I am making an executive decision to un-link some of these. I am doing so by adding a space after // and before youtu.be. If you want to watch the clip, copy the link and delete that space and it should work fine. Q3, if you want to re-instate the links, feel free to do so. Just trying to help members with freezing computers.

The riff is also quite close in sound to the verse riff from T.Rex's song "Funky London Childhood", from their January 1976 album, Futuristic Dragon.

A promotional film was made for the song, directed by Bruce Gowers, based on a performance clip shot at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York in February 1977 during the band's US arena headlining tour.

Commercial Success
This song is one of those cases where the radio charts do not have much to do with how popular this song was and remains. It was a consistent live concert favorite since it was released and got significant airplay on US FM rock radio stations. On the “pop music charts”, the song had limited chart success hitting #31 in the UK and #49 in the US. Therefore it is not always considered a “greatest hit.
In 1992, Hollywood Records had just signed Queen in the US and wanted to capitalize on the sudden success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" from Wayne's World. They chose not to release the UK Greatest Hits II which was composed of UK hit singles released between 1981 and 1991, most of which failed to chart in the US. The US album, Classic Queen, included an odd hybrid of US radio hits, singles, and fan favorites which was criticized by Queen experts and reviewers as not being sensible. Regardless of the critiques, the compilation worked, reaching #4 in the US and bringing Queen back to the North American consciousness, ten years after the last time they made any true impact in the US. “Tie Your Mother Down” was included on this US 3x Platinum and Canadian 5x Platinum album and the song’s popularity increased. To me, TYMD is one of Queen's greatest hits even though it was never a "radio hit" and has no sales certifications.

“Tie Your Mother Down” Lyrics
In a 1976 interview on Capital Radio, Mercury was asked why "tie your mother down"? He replied: "Well this one in fact is a track written by Brian (May) actually, I don't know why. Maybe he was in one of his vicious moods. I think he's trying to outdo me after 'Death on Two Legs' actually."
I am not sure anyone knows why Brian wrote these lyrics but they are certainly funny vicious.

“Tie Your Mother Down”
Get your party gown and get your pigtail down
And get your heart beating baby
Got my timing right I got my act all tight
It's gotta be tonight
My little school babe
Your mama says you don't
And your daddy says you won't
And I'm boiling up inside
Ain't no way I'm gonna lose out this time
Tie your mother down
Tie your mother down
Lock your daddy out of doors
I don't need him nosing around
Tie your mother down
Tie your mother down
Give me all your love tonight
'You're such a dirty louse go get out of my house'
That's all I ever get from your family ties
In fact I don't think I ever heard
A single little civil word from those guys
I don't give a light
I'm gonna make out all right
I've got a sweetheart hand
To put a stop to all that
Sniping and grousing
Tie your mother down
Tie your mother down
Take your little brother swimming
With a brick that's all right
Tie your mother down
Tie your mother down
Or you ain't no friend of mine
Your mama and your daddy
Gonna plague me till I die
I can't understand it
Because I'm a peace loving guy
Tie your mother down
Tie your mother down
Get that big big big big big big
Daddy out the door
Tie your mother down yeah
Tie your mother down
Give me all your love tonight
All your love tonight

"I'll tell you the truth, I know what happened. Sometimes you get a little riff, and you just put some words with it, and then you don't even think about what they mean. Now I'm remember thinking, now this isn't a good enough title for this song, but everyone said: 'Well actually, it sounds okay,' and so we kind of lyrically built it around that. That's the truth, folks."
