When Adam Lambert appeared on the eighth season of American Idol, people couldn't stop talking about the shape-shifting, 6'1" singer with the glam-rock sartorial flair, razor-sharp sense of humor, and jaw-dropping, powerhouse voice.
The Indiana-born, California-bred Lambert was a seasoned theatrical performer, even before competing on American Idol, where his stunning performances are still widely regarded as some of the most riveting moments in Idol history.
Lambert's debut album, For Your Entertainment, debuted at Number 3 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in 2009 and earned him a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance," in addition to scores of international awards and honors. He graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Details, Entertainment Weekly, The Advocate, and Out, appeared on every major late-night and daytime talk show, and became the first openly gay mainstream pop artist to launch a career on a major record label in the United States. Lambert channeled his newfound fame into raising awareness about issues close to his heart, advocating on behalf of LGBT causes The Trevor Project, Equality California, and GLAAD, as well as for charity organizations MusiCares, charity:water, and DonorsChoose.org.
"I'm a firm believer that life doesn't just happen to you", Lambert says. "We are all on a journey that we have the ability to affect and change. Sometimes we have to trespass out of our comfort zone in order to evolve."
Released in May 2012, the critically acclaimed second album, Trespassing, debuted at number one in both America and Canada. Over the summer, Lambert performed a series of shows with Queen across Europe. As well as dates in Russia, Ukraine and Poland, they performed three sold-out gigs at London's Hammersmith Apollo.
In September of 2013, Lambert performed with Queen at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas to rave reviews, including Queen themselves. "He's extraordinary," Brian May gushed. "It speaks for itself, his voice. That's one voice in a billion. Adam can do things which really I have never heard anyone else ever do in my life."
This year, Lambert is showing his fans the "intense forward motion" that he promised at the end of 2013. In between writing and recording music for his third album, he appeared as a guest star on five episodes of Glee, and is joining Queen for a North American tour, beginning Chicago on June 19th.

The 2014 Queen + Adam Lambert Tour countdown…..
#13 ”White Queen (As It Began)” & “The March of the Black Queen” (1974)
Released on Queen II March 8, 1974 (UK), April 9, 1974 (US)
I bet every fan has a small secret wish or two for the upcoming Queen + Adam Lambert Tour. My wishes are not really that small and they are not really that secret. I already posted my list of 14 “new” songs that I would like QAL to perform. Check it out here: adamtopia.com/thread/2365/open-letter-brian-roger-adam
Of all the songs on my wishlist, two songs comprise my greatest wish – I would like to see and hear “White Queen (As It Began)” and part of “The March of the Black Queen”.
While neither song was a single, or is on a Greatest Hits album, and while “Black Queen” is mostly too complex to preform, I am continuing to send my song prayer up to the white goddess with my small request.
“White Queen (As It Began)”
Written by Brian May.
Brian explained that he conceived the idea for the song while reading The White Goddess by Robert Graves which deals with goddess worship as the prototypical religion, analyzing it largely from literary evidence, in myth and poetry. Graves was a poet, not a medieval historian, and based his work on the premise that the “language of poetic myth anciently current in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe was a magical language bound up with popular religious ceremonies in honour of the Moon-goddess, or Muse, some of them dating from the Old Stone Age, and that this remains the language of true poetry...”
The song also had personal significance for Brian; he drew inspiration from a fellow student whom he revered and thought represented the idea of the "perfect woman". In a later interview he said, "I remember being totally in love with this girl from biology, and I never ever talked to her...I [was] dead to ask out this girl, and she became a lifelong friend, it's very strange...".
This song features contrasting acoustic and heavy metal sections. The live version features Freddie on piano in the middle section and guitar solo.

“White Queen (As It Began)” Lyrics

White Queen (As It Began)
So sad her eyes smiling dark eyes
So sad her eyes as it began
On such a breathless night as this
Upon my brow the lightest kiss
I walked alone
And all around the air did sway
My lady soon will stir this way
In sorrow known
The white queen walks
And the night grows pale
Stars of lovingness in her hair
Heeding unheard pleading one word
So sad my eyes she cannot see
How did thee fare what have thee seen
The mother of the willow green
I call her name
And 'neath her window have I stayed
I loved the footsteps that she made
And when she came
White queen how my heart did ache
And dry my lips no word would make
So still I wait
My goddess hear my darkest fear
I speak too late
It's for evermore that I wait
Dear friend goodbye
No tears in my eyes
So sad it ends as it began
“The March of the Black Queen”
Written by Freddie Mercury.
This song is one of the two Queen songs (the other being Bohemian Rhapsody) containing polyrhythm/polymeter (two different time signatures simultaneously 8/8 and 12/8) and a simpler polyrhythm around the end uptempo section, which is very rare for popular music.
The full piece was too complicated to be performed live by the band; however, the uptempo section containing the lines "My life is in your hands, I'll foe and I'll fie..." etc. was sometimes included in a live medley, with vocals by Freddie and Roger.
On Queen II, “The March of the Black Queen” ends with an ascending note progression, which climaxes in the first second of the following track, "Funny How Love Is".

“The March of the Black Queen” Lyrics
youtu.be/ckRX0k9owAY
The March of the Black Queen
Do you mean it do you mean it do you mean it
Why don't you mean it why do I follow you
And where do you go?
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
You've never seen nothing like it
No never in your life
Like going up to heaven
And then coming back alive
Let me tell you all about it
Oooh give me a little time to choose
Water babies singing in a lily pool delight
Blue powder monkeys praying in the dead of night
Here comes the Black Queen poking in the pile
Fi fo the Black Queen marching single file
Take this take that bring them down to size
March to the Black Queen
Put them in the cellar with the naughty boys
Little nigger sugar then a rub-a-dub-a baby oil
Black on black on every finger nail and toe
We've only begun, begun
Make this make that keep making all that noise
Oooh march to the Black Queen
Now I've got a belly full
You can be my sugar baby
You can be my honey chile
A voice from behind me reminds me
Spread out your wings you are an angel
Remember to deliver with the speed of light
A little bit of love and joy
Everything you do bears a will
And a why and a wherefore
A little bit of love and joy
In each and every soul lies a man
And very soon he'll deceive and discover
But even to the end of his life
He'll bring a little love
Ah ah ah ah ah
I reign with my left hand I rule with my right
I'm lord of all darkness I'm queen of the night
I've got the power now to do
The march of the Black Queen
My life is in your hands I'll fo and I'll fie
I'll be what you make me I'll do what you like
I'll be a bad boy I'll be your bad boy
I'll do the march of the Black Queen
Ah ah ah ah ah
Walking true to style she's vulgar abuse and vile
The Black Queen tattoos all her pies
She boils and she bakes
And she never dots her I's
La la la la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la
Forget your sing a-longs and your lullabies
Surrender to the city of the fireflies
Dance to the devil in beat with the band
To hell with all of you hand in hand
But now it's time to be gone
La la la la forever forever
Ah ah ah ah ah
Queen – when they were “glam”. It was 1974, that explains it all.
Live Performances
In March 1974, Queen started performing “White Queen” in concert. The BBC recorded and broadcast an excellent early version of this song.
“White Queen” BBC Langham Studio Version, April 3, 1974
BBC Langham Studio version of White Queen (As It Began) recorded on April 3rd 1974 at Langham 1 Studios in London and broadcast on Radio 1 on April 15 1974.

On the April 15, 1974 broadcast the album version of “March of the Black Queen” was broadcast. Sources suggest that either Queen ran out of studio time and were unable to record a fourth track, or that they were unhappy with what they did record, so the album version was broadcast instead. This means that possibly the track was recorded but not broadcast, but if so then it is likely to have been lost as the BBC tapes were destroyed many years ago. This does, however, seem an unlikely track to attempt to record, given its length and complexity, and Queen never recreated it on stage in full.
For the Sheer Heart Attach Tour beginning with the Sheer Heart Attack Tour on October 30, 1974, the “Black Queen” marched in. The two songs remained on the setlist though the Hyde Park, London, England concert on September 18, 1976 when “March Of The Black Queen” was dropped. “White Queen” remained on the setlist for the Day at the Races Tour through June 7, 1977 at the Earl’s Court concert in London.
