Written by the lead singer Freddie Mercury.
Released on Queen July 13, 1973 and as a single in the US February 14, 1974.

When I think of Queen live – one of the first songs I think of is “Liar”. I am sure I am not alone. It is a powerful song with clever lyrics. It is a song that was at its best live.

This is a Freddie song that predates the formation of Queen and was written in 1970. The song evolved over time and was originally titled "Lover”.

Exact setlists from the 1970 and 1971 Smile and Queen concerts do not exist but there are many reports that “Liar” was played at many these early Smile and Queen concerts.

Queen performed “Liar” in a number of different arrangements from 1971 through 1985. It was typically a long, long song – occasionally over 10 minutes long in the 1970’s but played in shorter versions in the 1980’s.

“Liar” Live in Golders Green Hippodrome, London, September 13, 1973

The Golders Green show was recorded and broadcasted by BBC. Queen perform this show for radio in front of a small studio audience. DJ Alan Black adds some commentary between songs. This radio broadcast (in quadraphonic sound) would lead to dozens of bootlegs. It was first broadcast on October 20, 1973.

During The Works Tour a short version of “Liar” (around 3 minutes) was performed. “Liar” became such a signature of the band that in the Magic Tour, right before "Tear It Up", the beginning of the "Liar" guitar riff was played by Brian May, and many in the audience recognized it immediately.
