Queen Planning to "Make the Stage Burst into Flames" While on Tour with Adam Lambert

Tonight in Chicago, Queen teams up with one-time American Idol star Adam Lambert to launch what could be the band's final major tour. Drummer Roger Taylor says fans who come out to the concerts can expect to witness an exhilarating and incendiary performance.

"We intend to make the stage burst into flames every night," Taylor tells ABC News Radio. "We might not be that young anymore, but believe me, the chemistry still happens, and I think the chemistry of Queen and Adam is magical."

Lambert has been performing with Queen off and on for the past couple of years, including a series of European shows, but this trek will be the first large-scale one they've done in North America. The outing, which includes a total of 24 dates, will wind down on July 28 in Toronto. Lambert also will join the legendary British rockers for four shows in Australia that are scheduled for late August and early September.

Adam, of course, is standing in for Queen's iconic and flamboyant singer, Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991. While Lambert feels more comfortable stepping into Mercury's shoes these days, he admits that the first few times he did it, it was quite nerve-wracking to sing classic Queen songs in front of the band's rabidly loyal fan base.

"Freddie Mercury is one of the greatest singers of all time," he tells ABC News Radio. "He's a personal hero of mine, and he's somebody that I look up to on many different levels. And so taking on his position in a band like this was daunting. And I knew that going into some of these shows in Europe and the U.K., that there would be a lot of hardcore Queen fans there, and I thought, 'Oh, gosh, I hope they like it!'" Luckily, they did, which paved the way for this tour.

As for Taylor, he has little doubt that Lambert was the right man for the job.

"Adam is one of the few people who can really deliver our songs in that sort of fantastic diva way they should be delivered," he tells ABC News Radio.

Queen and Lambert will be delivering plenty of the group's memorable hits, but Taylor says the set lists will include some unexpected material.

"You know what people want to hear, so you gotta really deliver there, I think," he explains. "So we do that, but then we try and make the show a bit of a journey as well -- to come up, to go down and to take people on the journey and leave them delirious at the end, hopefully."

According to Rolling Stone, the "journey" will see Queen and Lambert performing a rendition of a rare 1984 Mercury solo song called "Love Kills," which originally was featured on the 1984 soundtrack to a re-released version of Fritz Lang's classic 1927 silent film Metropolis. Lambert tells the magazine that Queen has reworked the tune for an album of previously unreleased material the band's planning to release soon.
