The song is in 4/4 time, like most rock and pop songs. It ranges from an E3 at the beginning of the first verse to a D5 in the next verse. The challenge for Adam is that the first verse is very low in his range. He can hit the notes, but he doesn't have a lot of power or ring on the very lowest notes in the beginning. He toughens it up with his delivery, spitting out the words, and half speaking some of them. A musical theater trick we've seen him use before. He has to sell it with attitude rather than sheer vocal power.
Until the second verse sung up the octave. He dials the volume up to fortissimo, and the voice just rings with power.
This is a song that is not really about singing. Most singers half sing, half speak/yell it out, which is totally appropriate. There are no long lyrical lines, no pretty turns of phrase. This is an ass-kicking, drunken sports party number. Adam SINGS the notes more than most others, but he still delivers them forcefully in a staccato, stabbing manner. It is similar to the way he sings Trespassing, in a way.
In order to sell this song, Adam needs ATTITUDE in capital letters. He has chosen to make it hot, thrusting, and sexually aggressive. Works for me!

Maybe the song comes across better live? I couldn't go to any shows... But on videos it usually seems sluggish and repetitive to me, although Adam seems to do his darnedest to put some sass into it.

First let me just say I can't analyse or hear "errors" unless it's a very obvious bum note. I only know what i like, and I like this performance of ABTD from the BBC NYE www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP2elcrzCbgI enjoyed his dancing and he looked such a hottie! |
