“ONCE IN A LIFETIME” CONCERT– QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT AUGUST 1, 2014 JADE MOON
This isn’t a review. There’s no way I could write anything remotely objective. These are my thoughts on being something I’ve never had the pleasure of being before– a fan. If you take a magnifying glass to the image above and look right above the little “M” in “Music,” you’ll see a tiny black dot. That’s me. Or rather, my black hair. And I’m screaming my throat out in a sea of bobbing heads and falling confetti. Front row center, baby! Yesss! And yes, I did travel from Hawaii to Toronto for this concert. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I was THIS CLOSE to Adam Lambert and Brian May. And no. No, I do not consider myself crazy, or “dangerously obsessed,” as one of my friends said. (I THINK he was joking…) But I am a fan and as such, I admit to a certain degree of obsession (After all, the word “fan” probably is short for “fanatic”). But here’s the thing. That obsession breeds passion. Passion leads to exhilaration. That exhilaration sparks camaraderie among like-minded, equally enthusiastic people and hey, it’s all so much fun! Best of all? There is the sheer, unfettered, heart-thumping, eardrum-shattering JOY of standing amid a giant throng of 16-thousand swaying, rocking, fist-pumping, singing, screaming fans– losing yourself in the music you love performed by artists you adore. What a thrill. What a high. What a night. This wasn’t a concert as much as a musical thrill ride. Queen’s catalog is so rich, vast and varied it careens breathlessly (but never randomly)– from thrash metal (Stone Cold Crazy); to stompin’, clappin’ sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs rock-n-roll (Fat Bottomed Girls, Tie Your Mother Down). There is the tripped out, blissed out, glissando sliding, singing guitar of Queen legend Brian May (let’s face it, he IS a guitar god). And then, of course, there’s Adam Lambert. May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor describe his voice as “one in a million.” Who’s going to argue with a couple of rock icons? Who else (besides Freddie) has the power, the theatrical sensibilities– not to mention the chutzpah– to outright own everything from rocker stompers to power ballads to the deliciously dishy camp of Killer Queen? After two decades as a journalist observing from the sidelines, watching others lose their shit over sports teams, actors, musicians, TV shows and even video games, I finally get to do it myself. And now I understand what being a fan is all about. It’s love. I know what you’re about to say and no– I haven’t gone over the deep end. Much. And I know it’s not the same kind of love you feel for your spouse or your child or your closest friends. Wouldn’t it be silly to equate fan love with romantic or familial love? I’m not silly. I’m a fan. And I repeat– It. Is. Love.
It’s love of an ideal. We are attracted to beautiful, exciting, wonderful things. Things that make us feel good. Things that stir our emotions and draw on our great capacity for loyalty.
Whether it’s an artist, a book, an athlete, a team, a movie, a band– it’s something or someone you admire, respect, exult in, revel in, want to be around, wish the best for, care about deeply.
You give them the gift of your devotion. They give back the gifts of their talent and their equally passionate desire to make you happy.
It’s give and take, desire and emotion. It’s passion and participation.
It’s love.

As part of an explanation to a friend about why Queen + Adam Lambert was a smash hit and other Queen collaborations were not so much, I was viewing a bunch of Queen Extravaganza performances. What a difference after watching QAL. What a let down. Of course they were not playing arenas, and didn't have a budget for the hoopla that QAL incorporates. But that was not the problem. It was just a bunch of guys (and one girl) standing up on stage doing Queen songs. No costumes, no hip thrusts and ballet turns, no characters and acting, no theatricality, no flamboyance, no showmanship. Boring. Vocally, after hearing Adam sing these songs in performance after performance, so brilliantly, so consistently, so impeccably, I actually cringed at times, and at other times could not continue to listen to the entire song. Admittedly, it wasn't crap. Marc does sound a bit like Freddie at times (tho' he looks like an insurance agent moonlighting as a rock singer), but that does not redeem the performances for me. He sings off pitch at times, he strains for high notes, his voice cracks, his tone is inconsistent , he is just not a great singer. A girl singing the low part of Another One Bites the Dust just sounds and looks all wrong. If you are a fan of Queen's music and enjoy going to live concerts in general, I guess it is an enjoyable night's entertainment. Seeing QAL is another experience all together. Another dimension of (un)reality. I know some folks on ATop don't like it when I or someone else makes comparisons between Adam and other singers. My ears and my mind cannot stop comparing. Sometimes I think we get lulled by Adam's level of performance and degree of excellence vocally and visually. It takes looking and listening to other similar artists or shows in order to appreciate how exceptional QAL is, and what a big part Adam contributes to that. Adam continues to make my jaw drop in amazement. I never really understood why fans of Marc would go onto YouTube videos of QAL or AL and trash Adam constantly and say Marc is so much better and should be the one fronting Queen. Marc doesn't sing WWTLF and since it takes so many singers to do what Adam does alone, there is no proof that he can handle 2+ hours of singing almost every night for weeks like Adam did. Don't know much about Marc's history but was he even a Freddie fan in his youth like Adam was or was he just capitalizing on being able to imitate Freddie (I took a look at his solo stuff and he didn't sound much like Freddie except for in a few notes). Other than him being able to sound like Freddie and somewhat looking like him, I don't see any other similarities. Never been impressed with the singing. No stage presence or charisma at all and I don't find him attractive in ANY way (but I didn't think Freddie was either). With Adam, we get drop-dead gorgeousness plus the amazing voice, stage presence, charisma, etc. I often can't get over how much Adam is the whole package. Out of curiosity, I googled box scores for QE and saw that they were not great. Good to great in Canada, but not great in the US, with as low as 34% attendance in SF. These venues were much smaller, between 776 - 3550. QE got great reviews on Ticketmaster so I was quite surprised to not see great box scores across the board. mbasic.facebook.com/notes/queen-extravaganza/queen-extravaganza-boxscores/415299048554400/I saw QE 3 times overall and I have to tell you they put on a hell of a show. It's a tribute band. A tribute band on it's own even if officially sanctioned is never going to play arenas. Boston looked pretty full for example. *shrug* I loved the show. Tyler Warren is a great drummer and Brian Gresh is a phenomenal guitarist. As for Marc...honestly and I hesitate saying this here, but I enjoyed his performance as much as Adam's. Much different styles and voices. But also trying to do much much different things.
