I got an "F" on an apron I made in high school. I threw it away on the way home from school that day. I hate sewing more than just about anything! But I'm proud to say that I HAVE sewn on a few buttons in my time. My daughter on the other hand made many of her own clothes so she can take in the seams of HER Tee if she wants to. 8D Adam looks so gorgeous in the latest pics from last night. I'm not in love with the hair style (tho I love the color) but it's flattering to him - what isn't? It's just that the style is so ordinary. Something he's NOT! When I was in grade 7 it was mandatory for all the girls to take Home Economics [which was half sewing and half cooking] and for the boys to take Shop. Gender segregation at its finest! Because my 'grade' was full of the first wave of the baby boomers, there was always a lot of us. That year there were 24 of us that promised to take French in lieu of Home Ec so from Grade 8 on, I was in a girls only small class, and we took French....with the cutest 21 year old French teacher...Monsieur Pepin...how lucky were we....except we were ill prepared for a life of domesticated bliss when the opportunity presented itself. Similar thing for me, but it was supposed to happen in 9th grade. By the time I got to 9th grade, I had been cooking for a family of nine for three years. I couldn't sew and my mother thought it was important that I learn. However, in order to take home ec, I would have to drop Band. My mother and I made a deal. I would teach myself to sew and continue to take band. Anyone remember those Simplicity "Learn to Sew" patterns. I started with those and actually progress to the point where I was pretty good at it. I made almost all my own clothes in high school. It was the seventies and leisure suits for guys were a big thing, so I even made leisure suits for my brothers. (Don't hate on the leisure suit. It was the style way back then). By the time I got to college, I was doing couture work with Vogue patterns. Of course, all of this was done from necessity. I didn't have much money to buy fashionable clothing. Fond memories. Of course, the sewing pretty much stopped once I had the disposable income to buy the clothes I wanted. The last thing I sewed was probably 25 years ago. I made my toddler son a Halloween costume.

Hold on. Having Discworld flashbacks to the Seamstresses' Guild! I was thinking the same thing. Now I know why the "ladies of the evening" in Discworld are in the Seamstress Guild. WOW!! The things you learn on ATOP. Yah. Wasn't it poor Carrot who was desperately trying to find someone to mend his shirt, and despite all the seamstresses he found, he couldn't locate one who actually sewed?!

Adam is looking great! I wonder if he is slowly morphing back to his original hair color--I think that's why he looks so young and fresh. The lighter hair always makes him look younger, I think!
Back in junior high in the 70's, we had to take mandatory home ec. as well--but because we lived in a "liberal" area, the boys and girls swapped classes for two weeks. We learned to change a tire and made a wooden breadboard (which my mom still uses!) and the boys learned to cook something and sew something simple. Then I continued to take sewing, although I hated it and never did well at it--which is funny considering that my mom is an excellent seamstress and my sister is a clothing designer who can throw anything at a sewing machine and make it look amazing. The best story in my family (my sister would say) is when I made a halter dress and wore it on the plane to Hawaii--and then the side seam started unraveling in the Honolulu airport.....and of course, no bra on underneath! My sister still thinks that's funny, although it took me a few years to live down the humiliation...

If they're flying on Monday, they'll arrive in Korea on Tuesday (due to the time difference!)

Not laughing. <breaks down and giggles madly> Yeah, yeah...and imagine my poor teenage self walking around the airport with one arm glued to my side so that the dress wouldn't fall apart as we madly looked at shops for a safety pin....
