No one asked for “No brown M7M’s”!
8.17.14 by Q3
The catering rider is just a small part of the overall backstage contract rider that promoters are given. The backstage rider mostly detail specifications on stage design, sound systems, lighting, and so on –but they also contain the artists’ requests from travel, dressing rooms, and catering.
Artist’s catering contract riders are always a bit of fun. The most famous rider was Van Halen’s demand for M&M's with the brown ones removed.
Last night we got to see the contract riders for Brian, Roger and Adam, and each one seems to reflect the personality of the artist. Overall, they were pretty most. Well except for the vegetarian diva, Brian May!
Update the Crew Catering Order
The Smoking Gun has put together a large collection of artist’s contract riders. Here are the descriptions of a few of my favorites…
Paul McCartney is "very fond of flowers," won't travel in a stretch limousine with leather seats, and will not stand for backstage furniture made of any animal skin or print (even if it's of the artificial variety). Those are just a few of the unique provisions contained in the ex-Beatle's concert rider for his 2002 World Tour, excerpts from which you'll find below. McCartney also provides promoters with an amusing list of plant demands, one that concludes with this underlined admonition: "No trees please! We want plants that are just as full on the bottom as the top such as palm, bamboo, peace lilies, etc. No tree trunks!" And, of course, the rider requires a pre-show sweep by some bomb-sniffing dogs and it contains the expected vegan salvo: "There will be no meat, or meat by-products allowed to be served in the dressing rooms, production offices, or areas within the 'backstage area.'" But it turns out Paul's backstage demand for 24 bars of Ivory Soap is a major vegan no-no, since the 99.44% pure soap actually contains animal fats, according to Ivory's web site. So, while Paul won't sit on leather, the Liverpudlian is apparently lathering with beef tallow. (12 pages)

Funny, David Bowie never struck us as a Mr. Coffee kind of guy. The singer's backstage rider also reveals how he remains the Thin White Duke: with the exception of a fruit bowl, it appears that Bowie does not eat any other food. And as for the "temperature control" requirement in his dressing room, we're going to assume that he's talking Celsius, not Farenheit. (2 pages)

When we first published Mariah Carey's tour rider, the singer required promoters to stock her backstage roost with Cristal champagne, which she consumed via "bendy straws." But Carey's 2010 rider reflects her growth as an artist: the bubbly has been replaced with a $200 bottle of cabernet sauvignon and her dressing room is outfitted with two dozen white roses and vanilla aromatherapy candles.
As for the furniture in her "living room space," Carey wants "no busy patterns; black, dark grey, cream, dark pink are all fine." It is unclear what kind of negative effect plaid or tartan seating would have on the 41-year-old's performance. Carey's room "should be about 75 degrees," and a "lamp or clip light" should be provided so that "harsh lighting may be turned off" in her backstage bathroom. (3 pages)

Prince: Back in the 1990s, Prince needed a doctor backstage to "administer a B-12 injection." And while there's still a medicine man around for his 2004 Musicology tour, the 46-year-old musician is now downing Yogi cocoa tea and surrounding himself with the soothing aroma of jasmine and lavender candles (so it's anyone's guess why the artist formerly known as the Artist still needs that medical professional daily at 6 PM). We also salute Prince for setting up tables "at all entry points for collection of Gifts and Flowers." Only a performer who really cares about his fans makes it easy for them to shower him with loot. Rihanna: According to her 2010 world tour rider, Rihanna (real name: Robin Fenty) is rather particular when it comes to candles, flowers, and seating in her dressing room. A six-foot couch needs to be "White, Cloth, Plush (No leather)" and "wide enough for her to stretch out on and sometime take a nap." Animal print throw pillows ("Cheetah, Leopard") cannot have sequins.
Since Rihanna's arena digs are often locker rooms normally occupied by basketball and hockey players, the spaces need to be spruced up with "Icy Blue Chiffon" placed atop drapery and "Archipelago Black Forest Candles." The bathroom, of course, must be "spotless," and the toilet has to be deep cleaned before the star's arrival.
Rihanna, 22, also requires a large throw rug (plush, with an animal print) in her dressing room. The rug, her rider notes, "must be CLEAN, as she will walk on it barefoot." Though perhaps shower slippers or flip-flops are advisable considering the sweaty occupants who normally fill these spaces. (2 pages)

Behold the Holy Grail.
Since we began publishing backstage concert riders about 10 years ago, TSG has been searching for the most famous rider of them all, the one in which Van Halen famously stipulated that brown M&M's were to be banished from the band's dressing room. Well, as seen here, the hunt is over.
TSG has finally obtained the 1982 Van Halen World Tour rider--typewritten and 53 pages long--containing the M&M prohibition (and a few other unique demands). The document, which we've excerpted here, also stipulated that promoters provide the group with "herring in sour cream," four cases of "Schlitz Malt Liquor beer (16 ounce cans)," and a total of eight bottles of wine and liquor. Oh, and the band also needed "One (1) large tube KY Jelly."
The rider's "Munchies" section was where the group made its candy-with-a-caveat request: "M & M's (WARNING: ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN ONES)." While the underlined rider entry has often been described as an example of rock excess, the outlandish demand of multimillionaires, the group has said the M&M provision was included to make sure that promoters had actually read its lengthy rider. If brown M&M's were in the backstage candy bowl, Van Halen surmised that more important aspects of a performance--lighting, staging, security, ticketing--may have been botched by an inattentive promoter. UNDER PRESSURE
PHOTOS: Can Adam Lambert Do Freddie Mercury Justice As Queen’s Front Man?
If there ever were a pair of shoes that were near impossible to fill, they’d be the rhinestoned loafers of Freddie Mercury. The iconic rocker was as good as it gets, which is why we can’t be the only ones who were surprised (and a little nervous) when it was announced that American Idol vet Adam Lambert would take the stage with Queen and attempt to rock the house down.
Well, while nobody will ever do it better than Freddie, Adam is doing a bang up job.
Here’s a look at his glammed out glory:
