Before the show
This is Adam at SUMMERSONIC Tokyo a few hours before he took the stage. It is one of my favorite photos of him – ever. And I wonder what was going through his head as he surveyed the crowd in one of the world’s premiere stadiums knowing that he would be headlining a concert there.

Hours before the concert, Adam, Brian and others from the tour were in a skybox overlooking the concert venue. Brian shared a photo of the view.

A Tale of Two South Korean Concerts
8.18.14 by Q3
Something unusual happened in South Korea last weekend and no one really noticed it. That lack of notice is a true sign of progress.
On Thursday night, Adam Lambert took the stage at Super Sonic 2014 as the frontman of Queen and performed a concert for about 15,000 people. Adam is one of the most famous openly gay performers in the world and there is no chance that anyone in the audience did not know that after he performed his campy, marvelous version of “Killer Queen”. He was standing in for possibly the most famous LGBT performer of all time, Freddie Mercury.
Two days later on Saturday night, Lady Gaga closed the two-day AIA Real Life: Now Festival, the massive K-Pop festival, performing for over 20,000 attendees. Lady Gaga is famous for her mid-concert mini-speeches and stories which she sprinkles into her concerts and not surprisingly she included a few on Saturday. She said…
“Whenever I come to Korea, before I go on stage, sometimes they give me rules and they say, don’t talk about certain things because some people might not like it. But I don’t give a fuck what everybody likes. There are gay kids in Korea. There is an LGBT community in Korea. And you deserve to be fucking equal!”
The juxtaposition of these two artists, both avid LGBT equality advocates, so different in their approach, caused me to pause and wonder – no one seemed to notice that Korea’s two big music festivals were headlined by LGBT artists.
Attitudes about LGBT acceptance are changing rapidly in South Korea, the fastest of any of 34 countries included in a recent Gallup survey (including the US). Similar to the US, there is an age divide, and a shift in cultural values is underway – and facing opposition from conservative Christians.
Global media and global artists like Adam and Lady Gaga are playing a role in this shift, but much of this is driven by Koreans and led by Korean celebrities.
There are now some “out” Korean celebrities. Last year, Kim Jho Gwang-Soo, a prominent gay rights campaigner and movie director, "married" his partner Kim Seung-Hwan in South Korea where same-sex marriage is not legally recognized and urged the government to recognize their union. There was a small protest before the public, outdoor ceremony but no major outrage.
This is a far cry from what Kim Ji-hoo faced when he came out in 2008. The following is mostly from Wikipedia but I have verified that the facts are correct.
Kim Ji-hoo, a Korean actor and model, came out on a Korean TV program. On April 21, 2008, he came out as a gay man on the tvN reality show Coming Out, a series which profiles the lives of LGBT Koreans. Shortly after the episode aired, Kim's personal webpage was inundated with messages denouncing his sexuality. Several fashion shows and television program cancelled his appearances, while his management company declined to renew his contract. He received no support.
Kim hung himself at his home in Jamsil, southern Seoul, on October 6, 2008. A suicide note found at the scene read: "I'm lonely and in a difficult situation. Please cremate my body." Kim's mother said that he "underwent many professional and personal difficulties following his coming-out", while police attributed his suicide to public prejudice against homosexuality. Days before taking his life, Kim wrote on his web site: "Life is like the wind. What's there to agonize over? Meetings are happy, partings are sad, everything is just a moment."

The aftermath of Kim Ji hoo’s suicide had a major impact on Koreans and their attitudes about gay Koreans – and help to accelerate positive change.
Over 40 years ago another performer convinced his bandmates to name their band Queen. It was a brave, some would say foolish, thing to do in 1970. That same artist inspired two singers – Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga – who just performed in Korea on the same weekend. Adam who performed music that Freddie made famous and much of which he composed, and Lady Gaga who took her current name from a Queen song.
The fact that Adam and Lady Gaga can perform in Korea is partly due to their global fame. It is partly due to 1970’s era gay artists who paved the way. But it is also due to the bravery and struggle of LGBT Koreans like Kim Ji hoo.
Hopefully, this is just one more sign that we are heading into a time of more tolerance all over the world – in Korea and in the US.
