Great essay, Q3! Thank you. It really got me thinking. Because, the number of openly gay celebrities in Serbia is - zero. The number of suicides related to the questions of sexuality is unknown, since no one talks about it. I can't help but wonder what it is going to take for things to move on from point zero in Serbia. It is an interesting question -- hard for me to imagine any country with a strong Orthodox church presence being an easy place to be openly gay. I split my time between Ohio and Mississippi. Two very different US states. Ohio is historically a progressive, pro-civil rights state with a historic commitment to equality. Mississippi is possible the most conservative, most religious state in the US. But both do not recognize gay marriage, do not have laws the provide for equal rights for women or LGBT residents. To Northeast Ohio's credit, we just hosted the Gay Games with 9,000+ gay athletes from around the world here and the entire community supported the games. Many of my LGBT friends here were pleasantly surprised. I can't imagine the Gay Games happening in Mississippi. |
