Review: Queen and Adam Lambert, Melbourne, 29th August
31 August 2014
How do you know when you’ve just witnessed an epic (yes, EPIC) gig? You sit up for hours afterwards playing old videos of the band you just saw, whilst struggling to put into words what just happened because you’re covered in goose-bumps all the way up to the fingertips.
A highly underrated Adam Lambert was humble to the fact that he wasn’t there trying to replace one of the best front men ever. He thanked the crowd of non-fickle eager ears for allowing him to "just sing some songs" and was oozing with pride to be where he deserves to be – on a stage with a seminal rock band. A band who knew how to appreciate and integrate his phenomenal range that was so effortlessly and fluidly introduced to the world back in 2009 as runner up in American Idol. (Runner up!!)
Playing through a set list including all the favs, Taylor and May demonstrated that they’ve only improved with age. Taylor’s son Rufus held his own on percussion, and more than answered his Dad’s call from the beat of the second drum-kit in a battle of rhythmic thrashing.
Both of the original members’ proved their natural talent with their own turn behind the mic. Taylor lead the way with A Kind of Magic, and took up Bowie’s lines in Under Pressure, whilst May took the crowd on an emotionally driven chorus, softly but powerfully delivering Love of My Life in unison with the reminiscent spectators, as Freddie graced the screens in one of many finely woven collaborations. Flawlessly bringing the dearly missed legend back to the stage; using his backing vocals was a solid reminder of how the original band made it this far.
With many bittersweet moments, feeling the sadness of the void; May and what is effectively now his band, reminded us of how you perform like true legends. Self-indulgent moments were lapped up as May got lost in precise and outstanding guitar solos.
Lambert was note-perfect for the entire show, his dazzling performance was awash with glitter and flamboyance, giving a fine example of why having the right person stepping-in to add a missing piece to a world-class band, isn’t such a bad idea. Putting his undoubted talent aside, if it means we get to witness even just a little piece of the same Queen who blew the non-existent roof off Live Aid ‘85, then heck, that’s alright with me.
High emotions ran through the entire evening, rippling all the way through the crowd and controlled beautifully by one of the greatest bands to grace this planet.
I personally thank you, Queen and Adam Lambert. You did very much Rock us, and you definitely are The Champions. Please do keep on fighting ’til the end!!

Queen & Adam Lambert – Icons & A Future Icon
All of my American friends on twitter told me what to expect tonight. I was smashed with messages over the past few weeks (including a recent warning that I would “roll over and die from awesome”)
I read the amazing reviews & watched the Youtube videos posted by fans. I was even fortunate enough to chat with Adam Lambert about the Queen tour before it landed in Australia.
On the subject of fronting one of the worlds most legendary rock bands and standing in the place of arguably the greatest frontman of all time, Adam’s attitude was absolutely on the money.
“It’s never going to be the same without Freddie. Freddie Mercury is a one of a kind icon and a once in a lifetime voice. He’s one of my heroes and I think he was absolutely brilliant. I don’t go on stage thinking I’m gonna compete with that. I just get up there to try to pay my respects to Freddie as a vocalist”
Those words I heard down the line in our interview came to life tonight in Melbourne. Adam nailed it. A perfect balance of respect …and downright swagger. Blistering vocals. Engaging stage presence. And yet balancing that out with a sense of appropriateness and occasion that was …well quite frankly – rather British.
Adam gave the legendary Brian May and Roger Taylor several intimate moments. He spent considerable time off stage completely as video images of Freddie tastefully emerged throughout the incredible show.
I witnessed something bigger than a great Queen show tonight. Before my eyes, I saw the birth of a new rock icon. There were Aussies at Rod Laver Arena tonight who turned up knowing NOTHING of Adam’s career to date …..and left with a new favourite singer.
Of course it isn’t the time or place to go any further with all that for now – tonight was Queen’s night.
Q3 note: This interview was recorded on May 28, 2014 before the tour started but Bryon included it with his new post.

Queen Waiting For Clearance From Michael Jackson’s Estate On Unreleased Freddie Mercury Duets
by Dave Lifton August 30, 2014 11:54 AM
Arguably the most eagerly awaited tracks to be found on Queen‘s next album, ‘Queen Forever,’ are the official release of some duets Freddie Mercury made with Michael Jackson. However, drummer Roger Taylor says that Jackson’s estate is currently holding up the proceedings.
“[Yes], if we could get a decision from the Michael Jackson estate, who seem to be, well, difficult,” Taylor told the London Evening Standard. “William Orbit did a really nice mix of one of our tracks with Michael and I’m pretty certain that will be on ‘Queen Forever.’ But it’s been like wading through glue.”
Taylor and guitarist Brian May have been working with Orbit on completing unfinished music that in their vaults and debuted one of the possible songs, ‘Love Kills,’ this summer while on the road with Adam Lambert. While they hope to have it ready by Christmas, Taylor admitted that he’s still a bit vague on the details.
“I’m not quite sure what’s on it yet,” he continued. “We’ve got some great new tracks that haven’t been heard and there’s an interesting selection of older stuff.”
