Anyone who has read my posts for the past 5 years, knows that I generally avoid comparisons between Adam and _________. And I particularly am bored with the discussion of Freddie vs. Adam. Seriously, it is impossible to come to any conclusion. They are so different. But please forgive me for this post – a post that I am sure will drive some die-hard Queen fans insane. It is about SHOES!

I think this tour has establish that Adam is Adam and Freddie is Freddie. And nothing says that more than the shoes that they chose to wear onstage.

They have a very different approach to on-stage fashion. Freddie tended to wear costumes on stage that were purely stage costumes or athletic wear (specifically Adidas who was Queen long-time sponsor). Adam has built his stage costumes on current menswear with modifications to make it more stage-worthy. But one similarity is that they both have performed concerts with bare feet…

Freddie

Freddie Mercury excelled at sports. He won prizes for boxing, table tennis, cross country and was good at sprinting and hockey. He was also awarded the trophy for the top all round athlete at his high school. As an adult he was a tennis fan and played lawn tennis and there are several reports that he was still unbeatable at table tennis. He also spent lots of time in the gym with weights and keeping fit. Perhaps this is what inspired him to wear wrestling shoes on stage.

Freddie chose flexible, flat shoes – often athletic shoes. For shoes and sportswear Queen were mainly sponsored by Adidas (which Freddie Mercury preferred), most of the times he wore Adidas wrestling boots, like the Adidas Hercules, or Adidas boxing boots or classic samba/originals Freddie wore Nikes on tour in 1982 when Queen temporarily changed sponsorship deals. On a few occasions he wore Puma shoes. One exception was in 1978, when Freddie wore Onitsuka Tiger wrestling shoes.

Freddie was also influenced by dance style, particularly by ballet. And he often ballet slippers on stage – particularly in the late 1970’s.

Adam, has a large collection of shoes and boots, and it was no surprise to Adam watchers that he has several shoe changes in the 2014 Queen + Adam Lambert Tour. Adam has a keen interest in fashion and, while he worked with a stylist for his tour outfits, it is evident that the fashion direction for this tour came from Adam.

Here is Adam wearing his red leopard print tank (and underwear from his friend Marco Marco).

This is a Katie Eary faded leopard print top. I think this was a T-shirt, and they just chopped the sleeves off because I can’t find a top like that in her collection. Katie Eary is a London-based designer best known for her bold menswear designs and her work with Kanye West.

I love that top! But, thankfully, he did not go with the whole Katie Eary red leopard look!

So I had a 40+ minute drive with my kids yesterday.

Something I'd been starting to do is introduce them to my music. They are pretty good about it. They appreciate my music quite a bit and still can like some of their own of todays. They are decent Queen fans of course. I started by doing the whole Queen Anthology with them (my own)...and now after I completed that I've decided to go through all my music with them A-Z (during car rides). I only handpick tracks out of the discography so it's kind of a greatest hits selection. Otherwise they'll be grandparents by the time we're finished

Now my folders are by first name. So we started with AC/DC and my eldest is a real hard rocker at heart and she loved them.

BUT anyways - how it fits here is that yesterday we started (and nearly finished) Adam. I basically chose a few pre-Idol/Idol tracks and then went onto FYE (and we got through all of FYE and part of Trespassing - we finish the next time all 3 of them in the car with me...).

My daughters have always like WYWFM and my eldest always thought Adam was "fabulous" (her words for very camp stars

- She loves that). And they enjoyed him with Queen.

Their reaction - my eldest enjoyed FYE more than Trespassing (she somewhat takes after me I think

), while my younger daughter loved Kickin' In.

BUT what I wanted to mention is a reason I believe Adam struggles to find his niche.

He has a great voice - of that there is no doubt. He just hasn't found his sound. Now you can tell me he can't be pigeon holed, etc. and he likes jumping from genre to genre like Queen did. BUT the slight/subtle but meaningful difference is that while Queen genre hopped, they always had a Queen sound to it.

Adam though doesn't have a defined sound. I think it has to do with just taking songs from different songwriters and then using different producers. Like FYE, which I like a lot of it just sounds like a phenomenal voice doing a poor man's Darkness with Music Again, a poor man's Muse with Soaked, a poor man's Bruno Mars with Never Close Your Eyes...so it never really comes across as his own. It makes it almost an extension of a covers album...if that makes sense.

Maybe I'm just rambling, but I'm trying to capture my feelings after listening to some QAL (minus the Q)

All in all, I still enjoyed FYE far more than Trespassing so we'll have to see.

So interesting Talon. Now I need to go back and listen to those two albums again since it's been awhile and see how I feel about them. Up til now I always thought Trespassing was better because it just seems more sophisticated to me. But I do get what you're saying about his own sound. I've worked in theater for a long time and I know actors go through a similar experience. I heard a director once say, "you're not really right for this and you're not really right for that, but for both you're perfect!" It's as if many people in charge cannot think outside of the box. I think that's why Adam had more luck being in the chorus than a lead. Also didn't Freddie and Queen experience some of that ? I mean it was a long time before they were well received by the critics. But I agree, Adam needs another great song that captures the public's ear if he wants to be a pop star. But I also think he can branch out into other areas and do very well. And hey, being known as the best singer out there today ain't so bad either.

Oh Queen was very rarely received well by critics. It was more of a hindsight thing to be honest. Perhaps the same thing will happen with Adam...although honestly I thought Trespassing got good reviews, just didn't sell (after the first week). Maybe the public will have a hindsight view later on...
