I knew the song, WWTLF, came from The Highlander, but I had no idea what the movie was about. Knowing he was immortal and his love wasn't makes so much sense now! LOL! I have seen one consistent thing about this song from both reviewers and diehard Queen fans on twitter, and that was that Adam owns that song! And we do know that Brian cried the first time Adam sang it! It is definitely special, but my favorite, of the "ballads" is still Show Must Go ON! I guess I am a fan of Brian's writing! I have thought a lot about this --- Adam shines on the Brian power ballads --- WWTLF and the SMGO. Brian said in an interview that he was inspired to write that song immediately after seeing the movie for the first time. He sang it in the car on the way home. The film version of WWTLF is more successful (IMHO) than the album version. The first verse, Freddie and Adam sound similar....but when it shift to the operatic section, Adam just rules. I prefer this version to the album version. [This is the version Q+AL does in concert.] youtu.be/I_Qe6yDz1HIHere is the official video with the album version of WWTLF where Brian sings the first verse. [Freddie looks great but the song was not a perfect fit for his voice -- and it is perfect for Adam. The high power notes are just made for Adam.] Note: In a couple interviews, Brian said that he did not think the official music video did much for this song -- and sounded disappointed with it.youtu.be/5L8-FTvSVxs*** My impression is that Brian must have imagined how it would sound --- mournful, grand, emotional, tragic --- and never really heard it sung that way until Adam sang it. I still think the iHR 2013 version of WWTLF was magnificent, not just vocally but the way all the energy from the entire place was focused on Adam and Brian. When the quiet moment happened before the end, it felt like the entire world had stopped. *** Just one more thought about WWTLF is that the song was written and recorded in 1986. Freddie almost certainly knew he had AIDS in 1986 but Brian did not. I cannot imagine what it must have been like for Freddie to sing these lyrics: Who wants to live forever, Who dares to love forever, When love must die.
But touch my tears with your lips, Touch my world with your fingertips, And we can have forever, And we can love forever, Forever is our today, Who wants to live forever, Who wants to live forever, Forever is our today, Who waits forever anyway?*** I do not think Adam "owns" this song -- I think Brian "owns" this song. But I think that the Adam-Brian duet brought this song to life. Yes, Adam is jaw-droppingly great on the vocals, but the combination of Adam's voice and Brian's guitar solo is where it becomes magic. Shear magic. *** And just to throw it out to the universe, I would love to hear Adam sing WWTLF with Brian May on the piano. Here is "Forever", Brian's piano instrumental of WWTLF. I can hear Adam singing with this. youtu.be/Bku7MaBm5nM

...and when it was reported that Brian and Adam would be in LA in Novemeber for the Classic Rock event, I had to wonder if there might possibly be any other kind of collaboration happening - maybe on A3. Despite their age difference, A and B seem to be real musical soul mates. It's not only Adam who is very busy, but as long as all three are able, there will be communication/collaboration among them. They are having too much fun to just call it quits completely. I hope so anyway.

Although with the realities of digital music production, people can record in multiple places and it is brought together in production. No need to be together.

Maybe it's just me and I am a starving person but this is flail worthy. This is the most assertive statement I have seen coming out of Brian and Roger to date about future collaborative possibilities and how fruitful they could be. So I am going to say SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
'cause I really NEED to say that and haven't had any opportunity in a LOOOOOONG time!

But it sure would be more FUN!!

Excellent article! It kind of amazes me that all the members of Queen seem to be very nice, special people and extremely talented. It must have been serendipity that they found each other.

Would really love to hear Adam/Brian/Roger do a full orchestral redo of WWTLF. It would be epic. Just putting it out there to the universe and hope TPTB hear this request.

Of course Brian owns the song. I guess I thought it was obvioys I was referring to the Adam or Freddy vocal comparison on WWTLF!
The iHeart version and the audience reaction is one of my Adam stanning highlights of the past 5 years! ❤️

Excellent article! It kind of amazes me that all the members of Queen seem to be very nice, special people and extremely talented. It must have been serendipity that they found each other. ....and so serendipitous that they found Adam! i love to hear how strong the connection is between Adam and Brian and Roger - and that it remains as strong on a professional level and affectionate on a personal one, after such a long time spent together. It must be easy on a tour, where artists are in enforced close contact for weeks on end, to start to tire of each other or for niggles to appear. But the Queen guys seems as thrilled with Adam now as in the beginning - perhaps more so....and it's clearly reciprocated. I find it oddly comforting that Adam has these great guys on his side....
