Queen + Adam Lambert are performing an exclusive concert on New Year’s Eve from London, close to the iconic landmark of Big Ben, which will be broadcast live on BBC One.

Queen + Adam Lambert Rock Big Ben Live will take place in the build up to the clock striking midnight to see in 2015 and continue after the spectacular, world famous fireworks display along the river Thames, which is also live on BBC One.

Brian May, Roger Taylor and Adam Lambert first toured together in 2012 and have since toured the world to huge critical acclaim. The exclusive performance will feature some of their most legendary hits performed by Adam as their impressive front man, continuing the legacy of iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury.

Roger Taylor says: "I never imagined we would be around to usher in the year of 2015, what a thrill! We promise you a great night."

Brian May says: “OK - Let’s Rock into 2015!”

Adam Lambert says: “Words can’t describe how excited I am, we are going to kick off 2015 in style!”

The broadcast of the event will be presented by BBC Radio One presenters Greg James and Gemma Cairney. Last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, featuring Gary Barlow’s Big Ben Bash Live, were watched by a peak of almost 14 million people between 23.15 and 00.30am.

The concert is a Phil McIntyre Entertainments event, with coverage produced by BBC In House Entertainment and Events, commissioned by Charlotte Moore Controller of BBC One. The Executive Producer is Guy Freeman.

The members of Queen and Adam wore red ribbons on the show because 1 December 2014 is World AIDS Day.

The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. In 1991 – a decade after the emergence of HIV – a group of 12 artists gathered to discuss a new project for Visual Aids; a New York arts organisation that raises awareness of HIV. They were photographers, painters, film makers and costume designers, and they sat around in the shared gallery space in New York's East Village. After a short brainstorm they had come up with a simple idea that later became one of the most recognised symbols of the decade - the red ribbon, worn to signify awareness and support for people living with HIV.

At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held at London's Wembley Stadium on Easter Sunday 1992, more than 100,000 red ribbons were distributed among the audience, with performers such as George Michael wearing one. The Red Ribbon continues to be a powerful force in the efforts to increase public awareness of HIV.

Ok, before we get whatever is coming today, I wanted to mention something I noticed yesterday.

If you look at most short performances of Adam (except the AMAs), you will notice that they tend to be more powerful vocally, and among the Best Ever renditions of the respective songs. This includes the QAL EMA medley, the iHRMF 2013 in Vegas, X-Factor UK, AI WWFM, all Leno appearances, and in fact even all AI competition performances. They feel more essential to me, more concentrated. I believe this is because he can focus on one or very few songs, make the right decisions in advance through rehearsals, and does not have to hold back to preserve his power for the closing numbers two hours later as it was in the QAL live shows. If I could make an analogy, he was doing the equivalent of a sprint vs. a marathon. In the case of X-Factor, he also had the added benefit of having performed STL several times a week for over two months and knowing what works best.

I have the sneaky suspicion that before the NA tour, Roger and Adam sat down and decided to tweak some of the arrangements to make more use of Roger's high and powerful backing vocals - see for example the last note in SSOR. The ending of WWTLF was even reworked without the glory note. In the 2012 concerts, Adam would go all in at the end of SSOR as it was the Shock&Awe opening song, while in 2014 it was half an hour into the show and was not necessary to show off as people were already "converted". At one concert around the end of the tour, Adam forgot to hold back and went for that note regardless - I think he felt confident and probably just wanted to "stretch" his voice naturally.

Last night, he added a high note just before the solo - he used to try a softer version of that run in 2012 that never quite worked, this time it was powerful and totally right!

At the same time, the TV appearance had just a fraction of the theatricality we witnessed at the live shows. The balance was tilted more towards great vocals vs. campy diva performance, which was very smart given the occasion. This wasn't the Church Of Glam Rock, this was the School Of Rock Singing. Those tweeting TV viewers that will make it to the live concerts don't know even half of what's coming their way.

So I am very thankful for these appearances where he can produce the equivalent to a flavorful "vocal espresso". I just wish he would stop using digital vocal track splicing for his studio recording and just do what he did with Nile on LMD - do one or two takes and go with the result without picking the best parts from many takes. It is obvious he has the capacity to do it, and I feel the results would be mindbogglingly great...
