Personally, I think it is the constant up and down from chest to head voice that is difficult in DSMN and to balance the power in each.

Brief note (because English is hard)- the word "pretender" in this context is an aspirant or claimant to a throne that either has been abolished, suspended or is occupied by another. It should not be confused with the term impostor, or the verb "pretend."
Also relevant/Queen connection is that "The Great Pretender" (cover of The Platters hit) was also a single released by Freddie Mercury, went to #4 on UK charts.

^ I actually think the Freddie Mercury Great Pretender connection was what was meant. Freddie described himself as The Great Pretender after releasing the single....stating he felt the song was written for him. Someone who may have had a lot of heartbreak behind the scenes, but in public he was still Freddie f-n Mercury...since as always The Show Must Go On.
So Freddie is TGP and Adam is filling in, he must be the Young Pretender....

In the article, Adam says he had difficulties with DSMN, but listening to it again, I'm curious where he might have had difficulties.. I don't hear any particularly high notes that might have been difficult.. any thoughts? [See video above.] Having dabbled in the rock band thing as a singer (back in the day ) I can tell you it's not really one particular high note...It's that the whole song is kind of an upper range type song...no glory notes but all of it is up there which to me was always harder and harder to recognize. Anyone recognizes the glory note. It's tougher to see a not quite as high but a consistently high stretch of 4 minutes. That was a nice article...except for the no plans to record BUT I still think that will come after A3 Freddie often modulated down a bit as Roger took the higher parts in concert. I think Adam himself points out my own personal preference in that Freddie's "bad ass heavier tone" But it was great to hear how Adam steeped himself in the bios, the albums, etc. and B&R still sound smitten so I'm happy for all 3 of them! Does "modulated down" mean the same thing as lowering the key?

^ It can but in this case it meant more that while the song was in the same key, he would choose an alternate note.

Ahh I see.. I mentioned the high note because in the paragraph after Adam says he had difficulties with DSMN, he said, "I have to do the big note or they're gonna say I can't cut it." I thought he was talking about DSMN, but maybe it was a general statement..

A nice article. Except this one part: "Yet if Lambert has not quite become the superstar many predicted, it may also be because his contrived brand of glam-inflected pop is not individual or characterful enough to really warrant world domination"
... oh well.

Yes a bit painful... but just the type of critique ,IMHO, that will give Adam some more food for thought.Gosh I hope this doesn't lead to Adam re-doing A3 LOL....#perfectionist

Maybe painful, but just the plain truth - IMHO
