Idol Musings
Ray's ruminations, rants and reflections on his American Idol addiction
Just for the record, the first “I love Adam” spoken in my household did NOT come from me tonight. You need to understand that this is a family where I’m buying four copies of everything he releases; tickets for MDD[1] and I to see him on back-to-back nights in two different cities; and three (expensive) tickets to him with Queen. Linders take Lambert seriously, boys and girls.
And as long as we’re on the record, this blog will NOT be only about Adam as there was a pretty decent show tonight. It is worth noting that Adam was the first Idolist ever to return as a judge. And he was great as a judge, wasn’t he? HCJ was spot-on observing how Adam had such a unique perspective having been on both sides of the audition room.
Wasn’t it cool when he “auditioned” again with Bohemian Rhapsody? Especially knowing how many times he has since sung that song with Queen.
Oh, yeah, this blog isn’t supposed to be about Adam. Crap, that means I can’t mention his major label record deal with Warner Brothers that was announced today[2].
OK, Adam said – see, I can’t help myself – there were six real artists tonight. While I’m sure our lists would differ, I agree that six is the right number. I do worry that a couple of them may be too artsy for Idol but time – and Hollywood Week – will tell.
J. None – He sang Bobby Brown’s classic My Prerogative which is a very difficult song to sing even though it has very little range. Not many people could pull this off. I was impressed.
Jax – This 18 year-old got behind the piano and sang as captivating, alluring and pretty a version of I Want to Hold Your Hand as you will ever hear. Adam said it had finesse and I agree. However, she may fall into the “too artsy for Idol” category. But I’d buy that song on the spot and pay to go see her sing it.
Tion Phipps – He sang a sweet and very credible version of Bruno Mars If I Were Your Man.
Maddie Walker – She’s 16 and another returnee from last season. I know. She’s a country singer – a country singer with a sweet voice that I really liked a lot. I’d like to see her do well.
Hollywood Anderson – Appropriately named for this show and he was given the glory spot (last audition) tonight for a reason. He sang an original song and MDD already has him lined up with headline acts he can open for and producers to make a record with. However, he is NOT your typical Idol pop star in waiting. I do worry that he is too original and too unique to succeed at the Idol game.
Travis Finlay – Singing Rihanna’s gorgeous ballad Stay, Travis was my favorite of the night. It wasn’t pitch perfect. But his smooth baritone and measured phrasing had Adam – and I – shouting and waving gospel hands. Travis reminds me of my current favorite singer not named Adam Lambert, Kwabs from the U.K.
That’s my list. I know the judges fawned over Najah who sang Maroon 5’s Telephone Song. I agree that she’s unique but I wasn’t as moved as they were. I thought the judges, as always, erred on the side of leniency even with Adam often correctly playing the role of bad cop. I know those errors get sorted out in Hollywood but I still wish they’d say no earlier and more often. And, oh yeah, I found HCJ annoying tonight.
Seriously. Wasn’t My Boy Adam a great judge?
