I don't get this....the songs don't sound alike to me except perhaps in the phrasing of "stay with me" and "I won't back down" but other than that, nothing alike IMO.
eta: I must have bad ears or something because I don't hear the similarities. Some people said Kelly's new single Heartbeat Song sounds like Jimmy Eat World's In the Middle, which I also don't hear the similarities too.
Someone put together a mashup of the two: I don't necessarily think that Sam Smith intentionally plagiarized Tom Petty's song. But, put side by side and modified to match tempos and keys, and they are so close to identical that the slight differences in melody are less than the differences when Adam changes up the same song in different performances. Paul McCartney has said that he woke up one day with "Yesterday" in his head, almost fully composed. It came so smoothly that he thought it was a song he had heard before. He actually went around playing it for people and asking if they had heard it. I think probably Sam Smith was just the opposite. He had heard the Tom Petty song sometime in the past, and as he was writing, the chord progression morphed into the identical melody line as well. Many songs have similar chord progressions, so that in itself would not be plagiarism. This, while not automatically assumed to be "stolen", was definitely "influenced by." |

I agree- I've heard far more egregious similarities in many other songs. Especially the one Cheeks referenced  |
