Does it seem to anyone else that idol is using James to attempt to make Adam less special? I understand why they would want to dull his legacy. Idol gave us Adam, but he also destroyed it for me. I didn't know if I was so far in the bubble to feel this way. I think Idol producers want to find another break out star like Adam. Understandable. The problem is, they don't have any real idea WHY Adam was so popular on the show, or afterwards. That is not so strange, really. How many people do we know who have said, "I just love Adam's singing and his performances" but cannot tell you what it is about him that drew them from the next room to stand in front of the TV entranced when they happened to hear Adam. It is a common phenomenon. Even tho' I am a trained musician and singer, I am amazed at how Adam's voice makes me FEEL. I can tell you what he is doing with his various techniques, I can tell you how masterful he is with them, but I can't explain or describe why I can listen to 10 highly trained, highly praised tenors sing, and prefer Adam's voice to them all. I am becoming more and more convinced that there is something in the voice that is hypnotic, charming, soothing, on some sub-harmonic level. Something in the combination of frequencies that resonates with something in my brain that releases some chemical that does something to make my body feel more in harmony, more relaxed. Heck, I have no idea. People trying to recreate the magic of Adam look at the physical appearance -- rocker, emo, indie, goth, fashionista, edgy, and think maybe that's it. They look at his range, his ability to hit eerily high notes in a rock wail and think maybe that's it. They see his comfort on stage and his ability to use it to the fullest, and they think maybe that's it. They see James, indie, quirky, rock wailer with a sympathetic back story and an unmistakable bravado (i.e. ego), and think perhaps that's what the fans were responding to. Let's push that. They see the outer, the surface and overlook the mystery of what Adam's voice does to us all, and the level of artistry he brings to every interpretation of every song. They don't realize that no one can "manufacture" an Adam Lambert.

American Idol is part of Adam's past, a good part, but has nothing to do with "what comes next." Nothing anyone does on there, including win the title, has anything to do with who Adam is at this moment or what he will do in the future. It is nice when he goes back to perform, but it's nice when he performs on Ellen or Leno, too. I don't understand why people search out trouble or slights. There is so much positive to celebrate that everything else should be left to the non-believers and the naysayers. Heap the enthusiasm on him, keep him in a cocoon of encouragement and love so when he decides to lurk somewhere, he leaves with a smile and a feeling of invincibility. Life's tough enough sometimes, even for a superstar, so give him a haven. Back to LA tomorrow, hope it is sunny and warm for the weekend. Viper Room Awesome post, keyboard. And happy birthday to CINDYM FLYNNSGIRL FRANCIS

Keyboard, I just wish I could put you in my pocket, and pull out your rational thought when I'm feeling most distressed.

I didn't know if I was so far in the bubble to feel this way. Uh, uh! Idol loves Adam! He is one of their big success stories, Adam, Chris, Kelly, Carrie, Cook, and Hudson. They used Adam to try to build James up. However, I don't think they are even doing it any longer, because it kind of backfired on James. Neither Idol or James have referenced him with Adam recently. It's the bloggers and journalists that are doing the comparisons now and it is never in James favor.

Hi Everyone. I'm a refugee from PF. I lurked a lot, posted a little. I've been homeless for a long time with no place to Adam stan and somehow found this place. I'm so excited to see so many familiar names.
With regard to James Durbin, I just wanted to throw out a theory. Feel free to tell me I'm completely offbase. I agree with what Keyboard and everyone said above about Adam and AI and could care less if James is compared to Adam. However, I've felt all season long that Universal has already decided who to sign, (James being one of those people) and this season is just one big product placement. While I think James and Adam are very different, they seem to be making James more "glam rock" every week. They even threw out "TRex" this week. It seeks likely that James and Adam will be releasing music at the same time this coming Fall. Is it possible that Universal sees James as the Pepsi to Adam's Coke, Burger King to Adam's McDonalds, BackStreet Boys to NSync, etc.?
If so, I don't really think that's a bad thing as a) it means they think Adam could really break out even larger in the future b) its gets Adam more exposure and, where there has been a comparison, Adam has usually come out the winner, and c) those types of products wars seem to boost both products in the market.
It was just a thought, but I was curious whether anyone else thinks it makes any sense.

I do not think so. I think Idol is trying to use Adam's success to answer critics questions about the failure of the last two winners to sell many albums. Look at yesterday's news and the Ken Warrick comments about Adam. And clearly the producers were trying to create an "Idol moment" with James performance last night. IMO those moments in the past were created by the contestants, not the producers. This year, the producers and Jimmy are picking the songs, Idol is arranging the music for them, they are being styled, etc. Cook, Adam, Kris, etc created their own breakthrough performances. Q3 - Your last paragraph reminded me of the first episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show. After he had interviewed her for a job at his newspaper, Lou Grant said to her, "You've got spunk". MTM smiled. Then he said, "I *hate* spunk." These producers, etc. are the Lou Grants at AI. HA HA HA! Thanks for the laugh! Honestly -- I don't mind if they talk about James and Adam or just Adam -- just like to hear about Adam.

Congratulations on your inevitable win. Do you have a crystal ball, play the lottery. I thought April was crazy when I picked it. What should the next contest be (You should pick since the odds are you will win) Shall we choose the album release date? Album title? Cover theme? Date of next gate? LOL, I do play the lottery but have no luck at it. I only picked the 21st because it was my birthday and mathematically, I thought it MIGHT work out. I'm a little off, though..lol. You have three more hours. The rules say PST I am the next closest and I am 5 more days away. I can't imagine a scenario that it would take that long to get to 1 million. lad things are going better in your RL.[

No accounting for some people's taste!!
