Hi Everyone. I'm a refugee from PF. I lurked a lot, posted a little. I've been homeless for a long time with no place to Adam stan and somehow found this place. I'm so excited to see so many familiar names. With regard to James Durbin, I just wanted to throw out a theory. Feel free to tell me I'm completely offbase. I agree with what Keyboard and everyone said above about Adam and AI and could care less if James is compared to Adam. However, I've felt all season long that Universal has already decided who to sign, (James being one of those people) and this season is just one big product placement. While I think James and Adam are very different, they seem to be making James more "glam rock" every week. They even threw out "TRex" this week. It seeks likely that James and Adam will be releasing music at the same time this coming Fall. Is it possible that Universal sees James as the Pepsi to Adam's Coke, Burger King to Adam's McDonalds, BackStreet Boys to NSync, etc.? If so, I don't really think that's a bad thing as a) it means they think Adam could really break out even larger in the future b) its gets Adam more exposure and, where there has been a comparison, Adam has usually come out the winner, and c) those types of products wars seem to boost both products in the market. It was just a thought, but I was curious whether anyone else thinks it makes any sense. Welcome twotrue! Glad you finally found us!! Anything is possible with AI trying to reboot. I can't think James would be a big seller of albums in the rock market. They are known to be very snobby. Who knows?

I was also thinking today that James is greatly benefiting from the fact that Adam was such a breakaway hit on Idol. Take away the many comparisons, the references back to Adam, or the enthusiasm for James because he reminds people of Adam, and James is, frankly, not that remarkable a singer or performer. If not for Adam, I don't think James even gets to Hollywood, much less the top ten. If not for Adam, James is front man for a garage band trying to get a steady gig at the local club.
I am not trying to be snarky or insulting of James. But, even in the genre of hard rock/metal, he is not extraordinary in his technique, his presentation, his originality, or his style. Because of Adam and Idol, James has the possibility of a career as a rock front man. It's all good.
Just IMO, YMMV

Render unto Idol, the things that are Idol's - the show is fighting for its life ,e.g. ratings. I give kudos to the producers for pouring money into creating an entertaining show... and keeping tens of millions to tune in. I do not think its about finding a star anymore. It's about creating enough of a stir, that will draw people in and watch. Just like any business, once there is a past formula for success, it is recreated , at times updated , or just even simply and literally copied. And I am glad to see that there are hints of Adam in the way that the show / some contestants are being presented now. That means that they considered Adam one of their successes. They are smart businessmen, they are surely aware that circumstances may be recreated but a person cannot be duplicated. Cheers! Adam's brand of uniqueness prevails.

Not exactly. Matt did not know who Adam was when his publishing company made the deal for Soaked with RCA A&R. In fact, he was unaware that Adam was making an album when interviewed on Aug 24, 2009 8:00am PDT by Lyndsey Parker. American Idol is looking silly pimping Durbin so much its a joke if you like him or not. So Muse likes Durbin good for Him. Adam is the only person Led Zeppelin has let sing their songs on AI. Muse vs Led Zeppelin = no contest. Well put, and ITA !

It was just a thought, but I was curious whether anyone else thinks it makes any sense. It is an interesting theory but I do not think that it has much to do with what is going on. The TV show makes over $1 billion a year. The music sales are a drop in the bucket compared to that. Everything they do on the show is about TV ratings and really about advertising sales/sponsorships. The producers do not want to end up with a Top 3 of two 16 year old country singers (Scotty and Lauren) and AAA Casey. Jacob is likely to go next week. Haley isn't connecting with fans and I think will fall off before the Top 3. That leave a Top 4 of Scotty, Lauren, Casey and James. James is the only chance of having anything newsworthy to keep the promotion going.

I think people here are just a wee bit protective of Adam and seem to think that anyone compared to him is a threat to his "legacy" on idol. Durbin will not make top 3 (that's my prediction) and then everyone can stop wringing their hands about comparisons and he can go off and front the hair band revival show in Atlantic City that is his destiny. I could care less if Bellamy thinks Durbin is all that and a cherry on top - people are entitled to their opinions so fine. For me (for you) neither of them can hold a candle to Adam's vocals. That's all. Thank you, I needed that, there is NO comparison between their singing voices, at all, for me... :

Having said that, of all the singers, I'd think that Scotty would make the record company the most money. Country sells. I think they're using James for buzz, but I don't think they're actually helping his future music career. Is there a market for his style of music?
