Interesting read. www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1slb13dBesides the obvious point this writer tries to make, a few thoughts: a) Our ongoing discussion about radio, the influence we fans have to manipulate and push the single or album of our artist, is obviously very much followed within the industry, as this essay demonstrates. b) I think agism is wrong either way, and her comment about 75 year olds just rubs me the wrong way. I realize, the rest of the article is conciliatory, so I am not going to make a big deal about it, but there is a difference between saying, that somebody who is Adam-only is not right for a radio station, that needs to have a wide focus, and just saying 75 - " *no* facepalm ". Fans are not the only ones who are rude, radio personnel are too, it cuts both ways c) Her description of the radio business matches my held perception. It is a very top down dictatorial business, not a free enterprise. It has now received some competition from more democratic media channels like streaming, but radio still has a top down stronghold on what the public is told is ' its popular music'. I still deeply detest how this radio business works, from the way how these PDs and their secretive allies, these 'indies', operate, down to the perception created at the base of an interactive medium, when really it isn't. It is interactive only on a small talk level, or community outreach level, not on its musical content. It's still one big lie to the consumer and it is the opposite of free. I still believe the public would want completely different music, and a much wider selection, if it were their choice. Streaming is eventually going to force that hand, but we are still a long way away from that. And her asking for people to kiss up to the station and tell her how wonderful they are, is only proving that point. If I call my insurance company, I don't have to first kiss their asses about how wonderful they are, before I can ask for a refund. I am a customer. In radio, I am not treated as the customer, the advertisers are treated as customers. We, the people, are being sold as the willing docile minions. I don't want to be a minion. e) I realize that Adam is in this case a beneficiary of the system, not a victim. He does have WBM support on this roll-out, he will get at least test play, hopefully more. I am still not trusting that he himself has PD or 'independent' support, but Max Martin and Shellback obviously do, and they are on that ticket as writers and producers. This is just my perception of the situation, I do not have inside knowledge and it is tough to judge this rather secretive business. At some point, I want Adam to be appreciated for his own artistic contribution by these industry insiders. He deserves it, I don't think we are there yet. Maybe, it is a generational thing, the folks that are a bit younger get it more, what Adam does, maybe these 'music selection committees' need to become more diverse themselves. It is hard to say what it is, because we don't know who these magical independents are.....but the situation leaves me wanting. So meanwhile, this is how we are crossing the radio divide, I suppose.
