Cassie I have question. Want your opinion on this. Been arguing this with my brother regarding this performance. This is a clip of Jacob Lusk from American Idol (the gospel guy) singing I believe I can fly. Something about the succession of runs here at the 1:22 min mark sounds a bit off for me, like he's a little bit flat or something, but my brother disagrees and thinks that it's amazing. Wondering who's right here or why it sounds off to me if he's hitting the notes right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0_gF1LzUmE

Wondering who's right here or why it sounds off to me if he's hitting the notes right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0_gF1LzUmEHis pitch is kinda sketchy in several spots. First is around :40-:48, with the chord transitions. Don't know what notes he was going for, but they don't match the backing chords at all. Very muddied. The power note at :55 starts flat, corrects to a little sharp and then evens out at :58. At 1:19 "open do o OR" again I don't know which note he was trying for, the F5 (too high) or the F#5 (too low). The runs you mention (F5, Eb5, Db5, Eb5 F5 repeatedly) were sloppy. The top note sometimes flat, the bottom note sometimes sharp, the middle note kinda blurred, the whole sequence of notes not precisely on pitch throughout (some right, some wrong). Granted, it is tough to do that fast and that high, but, if he doesn't have the technique to nail the notes, he should simplify it and not go for them, IMO. The song doesn't need that much embellishment. Could have gone for less notes and concentrated on hitting them spot on. The final high note starting at 1:37 starts flat, but he corrects after about a second or two. He sounds on pitch at the beginning, and the sound is very pleasant (tho I don't care for the wobbly vibrato much), but when he goes for the rafters above C5, he is just not very accurate or consistent. It is partially covered by the choir and the instrumentals, but, if it was a cappella, I think it would be quite noticeable. Well, at least to me. So, what do I get for helping you to win the bet? ETA: Just YTed Jacob's performance this week (You're All I Need). MUCH BETTER. He stayed lower in his register, cut back on the runs and riffs, built the song in the right places, and his pitch was much more in control. THAT was impressive.

YES! I knew I was right! I'll give you a nice Adam picture/gif if only I knew how to embed them :( Wow after listening to Adam for this short time, singers vocal flaws are a little more pronounced. Thanks, now time to gloat (jk )

LOL, I'm a lurker on this thread (and have been remiss in our new home), but MAN, Cassie, you have the patience of Job to analyze that. I like Jacob's personality and was rooting for him early on, but remembering that performance brings chills up my spine (and NOT IN A GOOD WAY). It was, as Slezak said, "A caterwauling catastrophe." For you to do a note by note break down? Wow!!! *hands you a medal*

For you to do a note by note break down? Wow!!! *hands you a medal* ;D ;D ;D I'll take it. That was rather excruciating to listen to! Still, I am happy to be asked. Often we hear someone sing and say, "Yuk. That was bad." or "I do not like it," but we cannot say specifically why. Sometimes it is just a matter of musical taste. For example, some people do not like the tone of Adam's voice. They find it too "legitimate", too clear, too polished as to be artificial. They prefer the sound of a rougher, raspier, breathy voice. They say it has an authentic sound/feel to them. I cannot argue with that. They are talking about what sounds pleasing to THEM. It is the same as the fact that many people like the taste of black coffee. I can't stand it, and have to hide it with a lot of cream and sugar. I like tea, but others find it insipid or bitter. However, when someone says they don't like Adam because he "screams" I can take issue with that. I can explain the difference between screaming and singing ridiculously high notes well. If they say, "I don't like Adam's singing. He doesn't sing very well. He is out of tune." I can challenge that with facts and analysis. So, if on this forum I can give people ammunition to counter the ignorance of some people's objection or dismissal of Adam's voice, I am eager to do so. If I can analyze the technique of other singers and explain what you are hearing that you like or do not like, I enjoy the challenge and hope it makes you a more educated music consumer who will have even greater appreciation of what Adam does. If I can listen to Adam's performance of a song and compare it to another singer's version in terms of technically and stylistically how they perform, I know that Adam will shine as the superior singer. We all stan Adam in our own way. This is mine.

Cassie, you always say everything about Adam's voice that I am thinking but can't express nearly as eloquently. I actually really like Jacob on Idol at times but he doesn't have a good grasp on controlling his voice & improvising yet. He has a big range but it's like he puts every single note he can sing into every song whether it makes musical sense or not and that gets irritating. And I loves me some improv but DAMN dude, reign it in a bit! I thought this Motown week performance was great, except for the final botched & unnecessary (imo) high note run at the end. I think he has a lot of potential & he seems so sweet & funny. Back to Adam - Glam Nation Live blew my fucking mind. Vocal BLISS. SONIC LOBOTOMY (Adam™). I demand DNA testing to confirm he is actually human cuz no one is that perfect. My favorite vocals were Soaked (OMG WHAT ARE WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT??!!!) and ROF (ASL:DKJASLDJAKSJD:AALKJSLA!!!!) plus Sleepwalker & SFW & honorable mention to 20CB for those batty-ass high notes. Has anyone figured out where the Acoustic Live EP version of Soaked is from? I can hear 2 major differences in the AL EP & GN Live Soaked's which make me think they are from different cities.

Okay, reading Slezak's recap about Lauren Alaina...he said click on this post--it'll make your day, or something like that, so I did: OMG. Kelly Clarkson's voice. I love it. Natural Woman is one of my fav songs, and I just didn't like Lauren's version of it last night, for all the reasons Slezak noted. And Kelly's version? Love it. If I had time, I would find LA's from last night and re-listen side-by-side, but I don't. It'll prob be tomorrow before I can even check back for answer to this question: Cassie, what the HECK is that note KC hits on the a-LIIIVE at 1:15 in the vid?? WOW! (and thanks!)

That is whistle register (which I don't care for, but may float your boat) and it is a G6! 2.5 octaves above middle C. Up there with the tweety birds.

LOL, Cassie, tweety bird...doesn't really float my boat either, but I was surprised by that note choice, and she sounded on pitch--also, must admit to liking Minnie Ripperton's Loving You (for a while--did get old, as I could never sing along!) Thanks for answering!
