Justin Bieber has/will have a 4 octave range???????????Just about the same time as he walks on water and flies thru the air on stage without a wire. No this is not a Bieber rant. Adam Lambert will have a 4 octave range at the same time. A 4 octave USABLE range is almost unheard of. Yes, some singers can do something weird in what is referred to a "whistle range" --- kinda a bird tweet, dog whistle kinda thing on an open vowel, not with words or articulation. I don't consider that usable. And some singers can croak out something called "vocal fry" way down low that sounds like your stereo after you blew out the speakers. Again, not usable. Oh, and, BTW, just cuz they SAY it is a certain note on YT, doesn't make it so. I found several examples where, for example, a D3 (D below middle C on the piano) was erroneously labeled a D2, the octave below. Most ordinary folks have a USABLE range of about an octave and a half --- that necessary to sing the National Anthem. Hence, Eber's advice to start the song as low as you can go in hopes of hitting the high notes. The usable range for opera singers is usually quoted at about 2 octaves. If the guys have a well developed falsetto, it can add maybe half an octave to that, and rarely, a full octave. Anything over 2 usable octaves is considered extraordinary. By usable, I mean that the note can be sung, with lyrics clearly articulated, and can be sustained for several seconds at least. Adam has a remarkable usable range. Many have pegged him as having 3 octaves, from Bb2 to Bb5. I have heard him sing all those notes. But, as much as I love Adam, the one Bb2 he sang was not sustained, just touched for a second. The same for the Bb5. I have heard him clearly support a C3 in the Star Spangled Banner, and I have heard him ring out any number of A5s for example in Born to Be Wild and Crawl thru Fire. So, I would call his usable range at slightly less than three octaves. A feat rarely heard in the pop/rock world or the opera world for that matter. Even more remarkable is the fact that he can and does go into the lowest register and soar to the highest with ease and consistency. It is often seamless, showing no significant difference in power and tone. Yeah, this whole post should probably go in the new vocal masterclass thread, but I couldn't ignore the 4 octave claim for Bieber. Range seems to be the end all, be all in describing talent of a singer, and that just ain't true. In one interview where Adam was asked how high he could sing he talked about his disdain for people who focus on that. His comment was, "But, did it sound good?" That's what is most important. And he sounds good on just about every note he assays. I'm behind on the thread, but I knew we could count on you for calling out the BS. Thank you, Cassie.

Thanks Cassie for saying it so much better than I could. But I don't think you have to worry that I misunderstood anything here. I said, that if you add his pre-puberty range and his post puberty range together and add every whistle and grunt perhaps you can get close to 4 octaves....maybe And then compared it to the nonsense written about Adam's supposedly 5 octave range, etc...so I thought I made myself clear that I was not taking those statements seriously.
Not sure where that got mis-understood. Anyways...I appreciate that you clarified things for everyone and took the discussion much further and gave additional insight.

Just got home and speed-read through this thread and surprised that no one mentioned the irony of this. Q3 isn't here yet, but I thought this was awesome as The Daily Planet was the name of our news thread on Planet Fierce. Q3, he's come home!!!!I also don't get the problem with playing WITWIGNAFL; it's not like anyone is flying to the country where he may or may not be. It's just part of visualizing the happiness and adventure he's experiencing. I don't doubt for one second he has found a wonderful, secluded place with lots of security. (And a hut on stilts surrounded by crystal-blue water, where hot cabana boys bring them fresh fruit and lobster via canoe, but I digress ...) I don't see how it's any different than us knowing he's on the town in Tokyo or Paris and speculating that he's "living in Hollywood," those are all big areas and doesn't mean anyone is going there to stalk him. It's just another game of fun speculation – experiencing his adventures vicariously as we did with Glamnation.

I don't know if this has just surfaced or if I missed it before. Anyway, fun, 7 minute interview, and the interviewer is such a fan!
It changes to English after the first 10 seconds.

I did understand your post and thought it was very clever. I agreed with all you said about them working to tweak his voice and performance so that it would sound good. I will venture out even further to say that I don't see the "great musician" that others refer to. He can play a little drums, guitar, and piano, I think? He is not particularly accomplished with any. My brother at his age could do the same. Again, I don't say this to slam Bieber. He is a teeny bopper star of great magnitude. He is giving young girls what they crave. I don't fault him for garnering the attention or fame he has. Remember I come from a musical background rather like the author of that Autostraddle blog. I have seen many, many musicians with skill and talent. I have seen countless wanna be musicians. From that perspective, most people in the pop music stardom don't have what I would consider extraordinary talent. That's the genre. It is what it is. I did not make it clear that I was responding to the original claim, not to what you wrote. (I didn't quote your posting because I was not responding to it.) We're all good.
