Hey y'all.
NoAngel: I loved it, as always. Really the most thoughtful and reasonable of fans. People often say, oh, I wish Adam could read this, and more often than not I think, oh, no, that would be embarrassing, and in any case he has better things to do and I hope sometimes he's barely aware of us and our crazy, even our loving, respectful, positive crazy, but I'm with Lynne here: I kinda wanna get Adam a subscription to your tumblr account (see how I'm all withit and shit and knew to leave out the e?). I think it would make him feel all kinds of good and reassured. I think he would love to read it.
The part I took most to heart:
"And then I thought—why? Why do I want Adam to not stir the pot, or to only stir it in ways that I perceive as creative and edgy?"
Yes, exactly. I do this. I do this all the time. I'll stop now.
People have been interpreting Adam's "keeping it real" as his not pulling any punches telling the harsh truth when it needs to be told, and indeed this is the context in which he brought it up. But I agree with Cassie--for Adam, keeping it real and being himself just as often means a much fluffier, happier thing--that's just his personality. And sometimes, old cynic that I am, I have to remind myself of this, too. Sometimes when he wanders down one of his dreamy, somewhat corny California-boy roads about the power/heartbreak of love and looking inside yourself for the truth (like in the concert-banter), I catch myself squirming a little and mumbling "but Adam, that's not how we talk/think/believe!"
But there is no we, midwifespal, get a grip! There's a me, and a he, and he's being himself, and of course I actually LOVE that he's a California new-age hippy, even as I find some of that stuff dippy myself. As mika, I think, pointed out once, sticking to your dreamy, positive guns in a cynical, hipper-than-thou world takes just as much "realness" and resistance to the "socially acceptable" norm as calling out people on their bs.
So I'm gonna take NoAngel's lesson today as a more general reminder that while I love Adam and frequently feel that when he sings/winks/smiles/dresses/grooms/uses words he is doing those things JUST FOR ME (so that I find myself asking who made this boy so meticulously according to my wishes?! Damn, can he read my mind?!) in fact what I really love about him is that he isn't mine at all, he's his own individual and will sometimes do exactly the opposite of what I expect/want him to do. Isn't that great?
Grow that skeezy beard, Adam! I think it makes you look like you belong on a flyer stuck to the wall of a dingy Vegas elevator with someone's chewing gum, but it reassures me that you will never be my barbie-dress-up-doll, you will always surprise me, sometimes in ways that make me uncomfortable, but that's great cause it ensures that all the surprises that will make me ecstatically happy can happen, too, and are totally real. In the end, it is a very very good thing that you can't read my mind--it's embarrassing what goes on in there, after all.
Q3: thanks for your visions of fan wars. Love the StarWars! Use the force, Adam. You're scenarios reminded me of an Adam dream (only the second ever--sob) that I had recently. He was back on Idol performing (I won't describe the irrelevant beginning of the dream but suffice it to say it involved a sexay duet with Harry Connick, Jr.--weird). So he was back on Idol, and after his stupendous performance, the judges asked if he had any advice for the contestants, and he said that they should make it more of an entertaining performance, and so Simon (who was back) said why don't you show us what you mean, and so a contestant would come up and do his song, and then Adam would do the same song like 18 billion times better, and it would be so obvious it was cruel. Then the next contestant would come up and Adam would devastate him or her all over again. Damn. It was carnage. Talk about fan wars. Just thought I'd share.
Finally, was someone looking for a skunk?
Sorry, I can't resist, I gotta post a pick of my sweet little skunky monkey of a doggie:
Sorry. I know you guys will indulge me, though.
(Edited to take pity on smokey and others' poor eyes!!!)
