My opinion of what he means by being more real is more in relation to dealing with the public and paps. I think when he wants to be left alone, he won't submit to picture, questions, and general interference. If people are upset, so be it. Interaction will now be his choice. I am a very assertive person, but I am also a people pleaser, so I know how hard that can be. I totally agree with this. Because of the context of his tweets about fans taking pictures, I took his keeping it real statement to mean how he relates to those who want a piece of him when he is off duty.

Great essay as usual, NoAngel. I'm like many of the rest of you; when a "gate" emerges, it's not so much that he's done something that would make me dislike him (I already feel that I know his heart, and don't have to approve of every little thing he does and says in order to love and admire him), but I worry others will turn against him. However, having now been through several of these publicity storms, I now realize that they will blow over quickly.
One of my favorite lines from a song ever is this simple reminder from Rick Nelson's "Garden Party": "You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." Anyone, but especially those in the public spotlight, could go absolutely nuts trying to figure out--well, "whataya want from me?" A person simply cannot allow themselves to start second-guessing their every move. It's fine to be reflective and consider what kind of publicity one might want for one's self--I still kinda hope that Gaga-gate reminded Adam that being publicly intoxicated is going to result in headlines, so he has to decide if that's okay with him--but the bottom line is still that it's his choice, not ours, and he can't let the opinions of others make him someone he's not.

Great essays this morning, Q3 and NoAngel. NoAngel, I had the same reaction when Adam said he was going to start keeping it real. Woa!!! You mean the last 2 years haven't been Adam keeping it real? More roller coasters ahead and I love them! I can't imagine two things: 1) Why everyone in the world doesn't appreciate this man, not only as the greatest voice of several decades, but also as a human being. 2) How anyone can even stan someone else. Susie said yesterday, that stanning Adam is like having a grab bag everyday! You never know what's going to come out of it!
Ahhh, Q3, very wise advice, as always about the fan wars. I hope most of Adam's fans are learning to stay away, except for when some truths need to be mentioned in certain places. And the James Durbin fans I just chalk up to, "Well, that's Idol. And these fans must be very young." :-/

Q3. Loved your post. I love Atop and the mix and balance of all the posts you all put up... Posts that are serious and funny, seriously funny, informative and frivolous, dramatic and subtle, deep and shallow. The tone switches from moment to moment, just like it does in real life, helping me remember that while it is good not to stay too deep or too shallow for too long, and that coasting in the middle can be restful, the moments wading into the deep and into the shallow are what give life it's richness, and it's best when there is a balance of both. You are the best! I am coming home from Boston and family, after a wonderful vacation and reunion, to an empty house, but all of you still live here, and that is such a good thing.

Thanks for the link lindy. I watched the first part. Glad to hear Monte and Tommy plan on still playing with Adam.
