Yes, I think you nailed it --- smart man.

Just a bit of interesting info I learned about Adam. It is about business so I am posting even though it is a bit gossipy.

Jimmy Iovine saw Adam perform in 2008 and asked about him. A couple of Adam's friends have mentioned this happened. That Jimmy asked, "Who is that kid?" or something to that effect. Some fans have concluded that this meant that Adam might have been signed to UMG if he had not gone on Idol.

I asked this question of someone who was with UMG at the time (and still is) and who knows Jimmy Iovine very well. He said that something like this may have happened because Jimmy is constantly looking for new artists and often asks about performers. But that asking who someone is, is very far from signing someone. He told me that it is very unlikely that Adam -- an openly gay, 27 year old singer with limited songwriting experience and no proof the he could build a following -- would have been signed to any major label -- and if he was going to be signed very, very unlikely to be UMG/Interscope who was primarily seeking younger, urban-pop oriented singer-songwriters at the time.

He told me that without Idol or a TV Show of some sort (like Glee) to use as a platform to build his fanbase, Adam did not have a shot of breaking through and doing what he has done.

This all makes complete sense to me. No Idol, no Adam. For this, and this alone, I will always be thankful that Idol gave an openly gay, left-of-center artist a shot -- and did not say Adam was "too theatrical" to make it in pop music.
