I wonder if this was just Adam's way of making himself seem a little more approachable and real to potential 'dates'. Sometimes we read about stars, usually female, who say that men are too shy, intimidated, to approach them (presumably) because they are beautiful, rich, famous....and therefore the star doesn't get to 'date' as much as might be assumed. Adam's beauty and fame might well lead some young men he might like, to keep their distance because they think they don't stand a chance....or not to want to take things further because of his time commitments and travelling lifestyle. Anyway - I'm sure he has enough successes to balance out!...until the special one comes along... Adam uses self deprecating humor all the time. It is part of what makes him so humble. And so adorable......

The Billboard article also said that the show was over after 8 seasons. I think it was over when Simon said "The purpose of this show is to find a worldwide star and I think we have done that". As an Idol stan, I think these 2 articles got it right! Idol lost its credibility when Adam lost. With Kris, Lee, Scotty, and P2 in a row...., the WGWG thing started! Then go to season 12, with Minaj & Mariah, where devoted fans left in droves, and it was like nails in the coffin! But this press cycle for Adam is an unexpected bonanza! He might as well perform tomorrow, now, because this "distancing him from Idol idea" failed! LOL! I know! I was happy for him not to be on Idol this season mainly because I thought he'd worked so hard to change perception of himself and his new music....(and because, indisputably, Idol wasn't the force it once was) And now he's got ten times more publicity linking him to it! But its all so joyous and positive! I've always loved Idol simply for loving Adam.....and it's nice to be reminded of those times. (Adam's audition episode was the very first time, I'd ever seen Idol. Greatest piece of serendipity ever!!!)...

I was never an idol watcher, but caught the occasional show and generally knew what was going on, and who the top two or three people were, based on secondary sources. So, I was very much idol lite...right through and including season 8.
Idol in 2008 had at that time already first signs of tiring: The 'battle' between Simon and Paula had become silly and was borderline annoying. That was something I had heard on the outside, without even watching. The song catalog had become lame, and David Cook was switching things up by changing the songs...I did not even know what that meant. Did not know that they had to pick songs from lists of cleared songs, did not know what they were allowed to alter or not. Yet, I had heard that critique about the show.
In season 8, the extent of my information was that it was Adam versus Danny, and those were going to be the final two, and that this was known since the get-go of the finals, so no need to watch. But the buzz around Adam spilled out, spilled outside of the boundaries of the show, and then all the Bill O'Reily crap happened, and a social agenda was poured out over idol. Being religious was 'in' ,which started with Archuleta, I believe, but certainly was carried massively into season 8. I had no idea why the show was all of a sudden about religion, but I sure heard about it.
Eventually, the noise level got big enough, and was confusing enough for a singing show, that I wanted to form my own opinion. And hence started my discovery of idol, and of Adam - along with answering enough of my questions, to allow me to form my own opinion on
-why religion was even a topic on that show - what that topic supposedly was and what it really was - how the show worked.
And then, Adam did destroy the naivety I might have had about that show. Destroyed my belief that Simon always got it right. Destroyed my belief that the show was about singing (no it was not). Destroyed my belief that the title actually mattered.
It also opened my eyes to a lot of things I knew nothing about. The interpretive opportunities of song covers, that were far exceeding those I was familiar with in my own classical music corner of the universe. The relevance, or lack thereof, of pop and rock in today's time. The fact that social and political relevance of music like in the 60s and 70s had completely disappeared from rock, and had in pop been commercially white washed, and was now to be found in a scene outside of idol boundaries, or the boundaries of my own musical taste (i.e. rap, hip-hop, christian music) and was only very occasionally rearing its head in country and pop music. It is not that I could have not thought about that sooner, it was just that I had tuned out and did not listen or think about these things. Was busy living, having a career, having a relationship, a family, social causes I cared about.
Adam just opened these floodgates and made me both explore a music catalog I had missed, and he made me think, and he gave me hope, that he was an artist who had the musical talent, the interpretative skills and the brains, to bring his own version of all this back. And hence I became a fan of his and never left, and I have been learning and discovering ever since.
Idol, the show itself, has stopped teaching me anything. It did not find finalists of Adam's caliber, even though it found a few good singers, like Haley Reinhart or Candice Glover and a few others. But I did not find anybody since Adam, who had anything of value to say or sing about.
Idol also never found the magic formula at the judging table that it luckily fell upon in 2002. The present judges are tolerable at best, imo. And a few season were even worse. The candidates themselves were bland. And with the competition of Voice and Xfactor, who in my mind are not better than idol, but get at times better press, or milk their more junior position in their show's life cycle, idol was just not relevant anymore. Now, the internet has opened new doors for artists and listeners, and the constraint is time, not availability.
But Adam will remain one of the top 3 stars of the show (assuming season 15 does not hold a surprise, but I sure can say that season 14 does not have anyone), and I predict in 10 years, Adam will be seen as the number 1 star from that show, ahead of Kelly C and Carrie U. And that alone will negate any possible impression, that this show was just karaoke and did not produce true artists.
Idol had its time, and Adam's time has only begun. Time to let this new album shine, and I believe it will.

We have hoped for the day that Adam would not be defined as the runner-up (or winner) of American Idol's 8th season. I have thought that Adam not performing on Idol this season might be a form of distancing himself. In several interviews he has made a point of saying Idol was six years ago. Then, all of a sudden, with Idol announcing its upcoming last season, Adam is squarely tied to Idol again.
But, I am cool with it because the meme is that Adam is an example of using Idol as a launch pad to start a successful, stellar career as a performer. Many articles go on to say that he is one of the very few, because he has the talent and the voice and the creativity and the courage to forge a successful career at the top of his field. Sort of saying Adam had the goods, and Idol was smart enough to latch onto him in Season eight.
Finally, the articles seem to say that Adam was the best (male) vocalist and the most compelling and interesting contestant of the 14 years of broadcasts. And they support that with links to his videos.
All this is painting Adam in a different light than just "runner-up on Season 8". It is framing him as a superstar in his own right. I like it.
