Why are One Direction fans trying to get 'No Control' to No.1?

It's a widely publicised fact that One Direction have a very passionate fan base, and their latest campaign could be their most ambitious yet.

Organized by four fans - Layne, Lynn, Amy and Sheena - the campaign to have album track 'No Control' given an official release started after the boyband's following felt like their latest record Four hadn't been given the promotional push it deserves.


Their aim is to raise the profile of the song with a week-long period of promotion on Facebook, Twitter and their official Tumblr page, culminating with a Thunderclap on social media just before the Billboard Music Awards this Sunday (May 17).

Its main drive is to convince One Direction to release 'No Control' as a single, but also get it to number one through a surge in downloads and streaming numbers to reinforce their request.

The campaign started with the aim of getting just 500 people to sign up for the Thunderclap, but that target was quickly surpassed and now stands at just over 19,000 supporters.

That gives them a social reach of 33.3 million people, with four days left before the campaign comes to a head.

For those of you who don't know what Thunderclap is, it bills itself as the first-ever 'crowdspeaking' platform. Essentially, it allows a single message to be mass-shared, "flash mob-style", causing it to cut through the noise of your social networks to make the biggest possible impact.

"Basically there has been a feeling in the fandom for a while that Four has been overlooked as an album, and badly promoted by 1DHQ, with only two songs being released and no plans for anymore," one of the campaign's organisers Sheena told Digital Spy.

"It's a really good display of the fact that the fans are not the young teen girls that 1DHQ seem to assume we are. The four of us are all over 30, and this fandom has come together to promote the music above all else.

"The band have changed and moved on from the 'What Makes You Beautiful' days, but the general public haven't been aware of it due to the angle presented to them.

She added: "Four is an album which transcends the sound people expect from the band."

Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan have both already tweeted their thanks to fans for the growing campaign.

But why have the fans chosen 'No Control' as the song they most want to see get a proper release? "It was picked as it is a song written primarily by Liam and Louis," Sheena explained.

"It has been a fan favorite since the album came out, and highlights the vocal talents of the group."
