I can't see TISI as a radio single -- at least not on US Radio. HOWEVER, US Top 40 radio is pretty wide open right now -- filled with songs that would not typically be on pop radio -- "Honey I'm Good" is a country-pop song which is heavy on the country, "Ghost Town" is a house song with a very unusual construction and a whistled hook that is close to impossible to do -- are just two examples.
It starts out almost accapalla, and pretty much no instrumental intro. Can't imagine this on the radio or how a dj/programmer would segue into it -- but it is a beautiful song. IMO music being appropriate for Top 40 radio is not the signature of great music.
Setting that aside, I am puzzled by the negative comment about this lyrics on TISI. The lyrics are meaningful and as complex as most pop ballads.
>> One other interesting this about TISI is the song construction. TISI is not a pop ballad -- there is no hook, no bridge -- not even an attempt to put a hook into the song. It uses a more traditional song construction found in folk music, 20th century "show" tunes, and many singer-songwriters -- including John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
>> It also does not have any pop mnemonic.
There I Said It
[Verse 1]
You say you want the truth
But you can't take it
So I give you lies
I give you lies
You say you want the best
But you destroy it
So I keep it inside
I keep it inside
[Pre-Chorus]
I tell ya something
It's a double-edged sword you're givin'
And I can't see the truth in livin'
When we hide behind a wall of fear
And you don't see it
It's a twisted dream you believe in
And what's the use in pretendin'?
Let's make the smoke and mirrors disappear
[Chorus]
So there, I said it
And I won't apologize to you anymore
Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I won't live again
And I'm sick and tired of livin' in your shadow
So, there I said it
No, I won't apologize to you anymore
Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I don't understand
Why I should be livin' in the shadows
So there, I said it
[Verse 2]
You wanna hear my voice
My mind, my demons
But not too much
Or you'll give up
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
For comparison....
"Stay" Rihanna Ft: Mikky Ekko[Verse 1: Rihanna]
All along it was a fever
A cold sweat hot-headed believer
I threw my hands in the air said show me something
He said if you dare come a little closer
Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now tell me now tell me now tell me now you know
[Hook: Rihanna]
Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you
And it takes me all the way
I want you to stay [the mnemonic, the memorable bit]
[Verse 2: Mikky Ekko]
It's not much of a life you're living
It's not just something you take it's given
Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now tell me now tell me now tell me now you know
[Hook: Mikky Ekko]
[Bridge: Rihanna & Mikky Ekko]
The reason I hold on
Cause I need this hole gone
Funny you're the broken one
But I'm the only one who needed saving
Cause when you never see the light
It's hard to know which one of us is caving
[Hook: Rihanna & Mikky Ekko]
