Adam is one busy man. Don't know how he does it.
Loved the AU X-factor performance and felt that same discourse inside of me, that I then found reflected in the discussion here, once I logged on. I loved the integrity of whole performance, this whole Las Vegas faux recreation of some alternate reality, and that was of course brilliantly captured. And then I thought, are these pictures from that performance going to be presented in isolated form, without context, and are people likely to project what they see onto Adam himself, perceiving him as 'old-fashioned', rather than understanding the concept behind the performance? And the answer was, probably 'yes'.
I just had to admire again, how brave he is. He is so much in the public eye, but in such matters, he lets the chips fall where they may. If people don't get it or don't like it, too bad for them. He'll do his thing. And you cannot take the glam or the performer out of this guy, it is part of who he is. Critics be damned, he will make it a performance, and not an intimate moment, even though he is singing about a lonely night.
There are many songs that have been written about loneliness that pull it in, make it an intimate moment. Very few songs about loneliness have wailing vocals and Vegas-show size dimensions to it. This performance did. But by doing it his way, he shows up the loneliness inside the world of glamour, rather than just the feeling itself. It brings that contrast out. This is, in the end, what Adam does best, show up the dissonance in something, rather than presenting just a one-dimensional message.
'Some people will love it, some will hate it, that's just what music is', said Adam in his very first performance on Idol (top36) to Simon. He has marched to that drum ever since.
But because he brings multiple ideas or feelings together, works out a contrast, that is why you find 10000 comments under every video of his, because people have something to talk about. And something to think about.
It is not the path to the easy top hit, but it is a path to building a loyal fanbase and growing interest, and interest in Adam has been growing tremendously throughout 2015. It is the path to longevity, and that is what he wanted above all in life.
