Adam returns to the Idol Finale –
and he returns a star.

Two years ago, Adam Lambert blew away fans and some innocent bystanders with his performances on the 2009 Idol Finale with rock legends KISS and Queen. That night he looked like a star.

Last night, he returned to Idol looking spectacular, accompanied by a handsome man, as a successful, Grammy nominated recording artist who was recently completed a sold-out, worldwide headline tour and is partway through completing his much anticipated second album.

A few hours before the show, Adam tweeted to confirm that he was going to be at the finale, “Excited to go to idol finale tonight!!” I had mixed feeling when I saw this tweet. I was thrilled to get a chance to see Adam but I was not thrilled to have to watch Idol just to get a glimpse or two of Adam in the audience.

I am a veteran Adam watcher so I knew there was no sense in checking out the red carpet until 15 or 20 minutes before the event. I started to watch the live feeds just about 5 minutes before Adam arrived. (Video on his Red Carpet interview below.)

The Idol Finale[/color][/size]


I watched this mish-mash of a variety show, that whipsawed viewers shifting between tempos and genres without any transitions, and used the Idol contestants as optional accessories. Not a bad show but not the celebration of Idol I expected to see. Here is a rundown of the show's performances….

But first....here is the best part of the show:




The show started with a Glee-wantabe arrangement with the Top 13 covering Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”. [All I could think was that glimpsing Adam in the audience was not worth this….but I saw Adam when they show the audience. I have to stay.]

But then the show started to get better – three of the male singers were paired with legends they admired. I was optimistic.

James Durbin with Judas Priest singing “Living After Midnight” and “Breaking the Law”. Rob Halford was great. [James held his own but was dressed in a black leather studded costume that looked like it was purchased in a West Hollywood shop – something about the look was not authentic to me and looked like a fantasy game character.]

Jacob Lusk with gospel legend Kirk Franklin and surprise walk-on Gladys Knight sang “I Smile”. Jacob was great and he was the star of this number. [He just seemed to be having a good time. He is much better when he is relaxed and not competing.]

Casey Abrams and Jack Black covered Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” inexplicably accompanied by four female bicyclists. [Oddly, this all worked.]

Idol Women’s Group Number – a medley of Beyoncé songs, including “Single Ladies”, “Irreplaceable”, and “If I Were a Boy”. Then Beyoncé and her dancers joined them for “Crazy in Love”. [This seemed like it went on for 27 hours. Beyoncé was really good but some of the Idol girls did not seem comfortable with the choreography.]

Haley Reinhart and Tony Bennett sang a duet of Bennett’s “Steppin’ Out”. [Is this the Ed Sullivan Show? I love Tony Bennett but Haley deserved a more contemporary song and duet partner -- not a big market for old-school jazz singers.]

Lil’ Jon and the two surviving members of TLC sang “No Scrubs” then were joined by Naima Adedapo, Thia Megia, Karen Rodriguez, and Ashthon Jones for “Waterfalls”.

Scotty McCreedy and Tim McGraw duet on McGraw’s big hit, “Live Like You Were Dying”. [They just traded off verses and the whole thing was not really a duet.]

Mark Anthony with Sheila E on percussion and Jennifer Lopez dancing performed. [No Idols involved.]

Idol Men’s Group Number: Prince’s “Kiss” and Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady”, “What’s New, Pussycat”, “Green Green Grass of Home”, “Love Me Tonight”, and “Delilah”. Tom Jones joined the group for the final song, “It’s Not Unusual”. [Prince + Tom Jones – can anyone explain this to me? ETA: Thanks, I forgot about the Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones cover of "Kiss" -- which was a minor dance club hit in the US and a real hit in the UK. Sorry TJ fans!]

Lady Gaga performed "The Edge of Glory" atop a mountain of artificial rocks, wearing a pointed headdress studded with glittering jewels. Simulated sex with one of her male dancers and a dramatic fall/fake suicide into an artificial volcano. [Gaga seemed stressed – her vocal ranged from great to pushed. She is so great live – not seeing that Gaga here tonight. All I can think about is how hard it must be to be Lady Gaga. Oh, no Idols involved again. Would have been interesting to see Lauren and Scotty jump off that cliff.]

Lauren Alaina and Carrie Underwood performed Carrie’s song "Before He Cheats". [Carrie is very good.]

Beyoncé returned to perform her new single, "1 + 1". In contrast to Gaga's elaborate production, Beyoncé was accompanied only by piano plus some wind and fog. The dramatic ballad was an ideal showcase for her voice. [Beyoncé’s performance was IMO the best vocals of the night. No Idols involved -- again.]

Bono, The Edge and Reeve Carney performed a forgettable song from “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” (and a Spidey-costumed acrobat on a wire drops in front of J.Lo.). [No Idols involved -- #4.]

Steven Tyler sang Aerosmith's "Dream On” and he can still hit those notes.


Odd bits about the show:

Scotty won [as expected].

Adam and Sauli were seated directly in front of Kris and Katy Allen.

The fact that this was the 10th American Idol finale was not part of the show.

Aside from the introduction to the show which featured pictures of the first 9 winners, Lee was not part of the show. He was in the audience in the 5th row but barely got any screen time.

The most boring season of Idol has ended. I hope Adam had a nice time.

WWFM nominated for a 2011 APRA Music Award [Australia]

California Gurls, performed by Katy Perry, was nominated for Most Performed International Work. The classic by Brian Wilson and Michael Love was reworked by Calvin Broadus, Katheryn Hudson, Martin Sandberg, Lukasz Gottwald, Bonnie McKee and Benjamin Levin.

It will fight it out with Fireflies by songwriter Adam Young who performs under the moniker Owl City. Lead vocalist and songwriter of Train, Patrick Monahan, was nominated along with co-writers Amund Bjorklund and Espen Lind for Hey, Soul Sister. Will Adams a.k.a will.i.am received a nomination for O.M.G (performed by Usher featuring will.i.am) while Pink, Martin Sandberg and Johan Schuster are in the running with Whataya Want From Me performed by Adam Lambert.
