Adam Lambert Announces 2016 U.S. Tour Dates
1/12/2016 by Michele Amabile Angermiller
Adam Lambert performs in concert in Shanghai, China on Jan. 5, 2016.
IMAGINECHINA/SPLASH NEWS
Adam Lambert's long awaited tour of the United States is now a reality.
The American Idol Season 8 runner-up will kick off his 22-date The Original High tour at the Paramount in Huntington, New York on Feb. 23.
The 33-year-old entertainer teases these will be his most "comprehensive" shows yet.
"I am so thrilled to be getting back to my fans in the U.S. with this tour," he tells Billboard. "I saw a lot of fans over December doing radio sponsored shows which were really fun, but this is going to be different because this show I put together myself with my team."
The 90-minute show will feature music from The Original High with "some old favorites as well."
Lambert is coming off the success of the worldwide hit "Ghost Town" off the Warner Brothers release The Original High, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The response to it was so strong that the singer felt the time was right for a full solo tour.
"I couldn't believe the plays that it got on Spotify. That blew my mind," he said. "I think when you have music that is connecting with lots of different people around the world, you have to respond to that. I'm very thankful."
The singer, who will rejoin Queen for some festival dates in Europe this summer, said he's applying the lessons he learned touring with the British rock group to his live show.
"I’m really thrilled because I got to set up my game with the visual aspect of the show and kind of stringing the songs together in a way that tells a story emotionally," he said. "It's really interesting because I wanted to get all these songs in. One of the things that I worked on with Queen that became a real strong point is stitching songs together. It keeps the energy moving."
Asked for details on the stage setup, Lambert said he's "definitely stepped it up" for this one.
"We have lighting, and we have video content that is carefully curated for each song," he said. "I have two dancers on stage who are also background singers and will do something a little different, and a four-piece band that is incredible."
As always, Lambert has the fashion angle covered, too.
"You know me. When it comes to this kind of stuff, the fashion has to make sense. It has to fit the music that I am singing so, with this new tour, it’s different than the Queen look," he said. "With Queen it was me getting to pay tribute to ‘70s and ‘80s rock n' roll and Freddy Mercury and what he inspired me to think of when I think of rock star. With this one, with The Original High Tour, it’s really from my imagination. My reference points are contemporary and designers that I know personally and things that I am drawn to."
The tour will wrap in Los Angeles on April 2, so Lambert -- who was recently named Forbes top earning American Idol veteran with earnings of $10 million in the last year -- can finally enjoy the $2.995 million Hollywood residence he bought in 2014.
"I was in and out all last year," he said. "I had enough down time. But too much down time and I start going crazy. I like to be busy."
Speaking of busy, it must be noted that there's a big gap in his schedule just in time for the American Idol series finale on April 7. Will fans get to see him on that stage one last time?
"I don’t know if I should say," he said coyly. "The cat’s not out of the bag yet."
Pressed for a hint, the singer just laughed.
"Yes, most likely," he said. "Yes Ma’am".
Beyond that, the singer wants to "breathe." That will be a little tough over the next few months, as he is also serving as a judge in the touchtunesbreakoutband.com talent competition.
"I think for the next six months I am performing a lot, and after that point I think I will take a little bit of a break," he said. "And then I'll start working on something new. Who knows?"
Presale tickets for The Original High tour go on sale 10 a.m. Wednesday morning (Jan. 13) through the Citi Private Pass program at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets go on sale to the public 10 a.m. Jan. 15.
Tour dates are as follows:

What Adam Lambert Admired Most About David Bowie

Ask Adam Lambert what exactly it is that he, a fervent fan of the late David Bowie, loved most about his idol and expect a long answer that really comes down to one thing: Bowie was an original.
“First of all, as a lyricist and musician, he was such a poet, so hats off to him for that,” Lambert told Yahoo Celebrity the day after Bowie died of cancer at 69. “But also, I just think that the concepts that he dared to explore were especially — at the time, in the ‘70s — were still pretty taboo and still really left of center, and I think he was really brave that way. You know he really challenged our idea of gender stereotypes. In the '70s, he was doing a lot of very provocative, androgynous type of imagery and song content.
"And then into the '80s, he kind of pushed this uber masculine kind of classic throwback image, which was just such an interesting reinvention,” Lambert continued. “He was exploring both sides of it, and … in many ways I relate to that. And I’m inspired by that, because I think that it’s good to shake it up. It’s good to sort of challenge people’s perceptions and explore. He was an explorer. And I think he said that. He was a collector and an explorer.”
Bowie, in fact, said, “I’m a collector. I collect personalities, ideas. I seem to draw a lot of fantasies out of people.” He spoke those words back in 1973 as he was being interviewed by broadcaster Russell Harty in an interview on British TV.
Lambert, 33, was born a decade after Bowie became a star, but he credits his upbringing with his familiarity with all periods of the elder rocker’s career.
“He meant a lot to my father, so there’s this family connection for me,” Lambert shared. “My dad [Eber Lambert] kinda grew up listening to his albums and I heard his albums around the house.”
It’s precisely because of that that the San Diego native has a tough time naming his favorite Bowie album.
“Well, there’s obviously the stuff I’m talking about right now, with this whole concept of fame and androgyny and sexuality and things like that,” he said. “[1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars] obviously, that was what it was all about. I also really liked when he made that really strong move over to Young Americans [in 1985], which was an album that sort of allowed him to step way outside what we had heard from him in the past. He did sort of like a Philly soul, R&B, disco funk kind of vibe. I really love that album. I think it’s really groovy!“
Although Lambert often performs Bowie’s work — he even did a Bowie medley on American Idol last season — he never encountered him directly.
"Unfortunately, I never got a chance to meet him,” Lambert said. “I was lucky enough to get like a degree of separation. I worked with [Bowie’s frequent producer] Nile Rodgers. I’ve worked with [Bowie collaborators] Queen, obviously, and I was always asking questions and for stories about him. I’m so fascinated by David Bowie.”
While Lambert found the news of Bowie’s death “shocking,” he also found a silver lining in the timing of it all.
“I have to say that the beautiful thing about all of it is that he was able to release his latest album and the unbelievable music video work just recently,” said Lambert, referring to Bowie’s 26th album, the critically-acclaimed Blackstar, which dropped on his birthday, Jan. 8. “It’s such a beautiful way to sort of close out his time here on earth.”
Although, with Lambert around, music fans can still appreciate some of Bowie’s influence.

Adam Lambert Pays Tribute to David Bowie: 'He Treated His Departure Like a Work of Art
by Michele Amabile Angermiller

Imaginechina/Splash News
Plus: Watch the "American Idol" alum perform "Let's Dance" at a show in Japan on Monday night.
Adam Lambert was just a child when he first discovered David Bowie, and even then, he felt he'd found a kindred spirit in music.
"Foremost is the music, but the first thing that I saw as a spectator was how he looked and his image and his styling and his concepts that he pushed forward that were so out of the box and so forward-thinking," he told Billboard on Monday, the day Bowie's death at age 69 was announced. "I loved how he challenged people as far as what he thought of how gender was represented. I love that he borrowed from the mime culture in some of his early stuff and how he reinvented himself decade by decade. I think he really inspired a lot of pop artists that way."
Lambert was only 1 when Bowie released Let's Dance in 1983, and years later, the American Idol alum had the opportunity to record with that album's legendary producer, Nile Rodgers.
"I have a particular fond spot for Bowie’s collaboration with Nile Rodgers because I, too, got to work with Nile, so I’ve heard stories and I love that sound that he put forth with that era," Lambert says. "I loved the funky kind of dance hybrid stuff that he was doing."
While working with Rodgers, Lambert was a willing student and asked many questions about Bowie and what it was like to work on that project. "He said [Bowie] was so brilliant, and he said he was always impressed by all of his ideas," he says. "He was an idea person, and I am fascinated by that."
Lambert also said he learned a lot about Bowie's artistry when he performed with Queen and was particularly interested in the crafting of the single "Under Pressure," which Bowie recorded with late singer Freddie Mercury. "That song was based mostly on them freestyling on ad libs, and then they sort of stitched together a song out of it, which was kind of fascinating," he said. "They didn’t write the song in the traditional sense, which is the proof of Bowie and Mercury’s genius and how much they were the music."
Bowie's final album, Blackstar, is a testament to Bowie's artistry, Lambert says. "It is really beautiful. I think he knew that he was sick and kind of timed it to be a sort of farewell to his fans, and I think that is so beautiful that he treated his departure like a work of art. That’s fantastic, and it’s so him."
Lambert paid tribute to Bowie with a cover of his favorite song -- "Let's Dance" -- at a show in Osaka, Japan, on Monday night. "I loved him so much," he says onstage.
