I have been trying to put myself on an adam/atop diet but mys*&@^#r that picture is to die for...sigh.
Just want to say...and this is not that well thought out...that I think we are jumping the gun and relying on old dialectic sterotypes when we force a choice between gaga and adele. That is a typical 'bad' girl/good'girl' pairing that 1st of all is completely inappropriate, and 2nd, does not leave room for a truly unique new emergent culture-changing star. If I were to pick a preferred mentor from the two options, I would unequivocally choose Gaga for one simple reason. She is forward thinking and forward moving. Adele is talented and amazing in her own way. But she is not now and never will be, iconic IMHO. She is almost old-fashioned in her way. Not to mention, she may have destroyed some of her singing equipment and she is only in her early 20's. Not to be emulated.
Adam is setting his own path....it veres a little more toward Gaga than Adele I think but really, it is his own path because although the way that Gaga has strategized her collision with fame is unique and original...her talent is above the norm but nowhere near the stratosphere inhabited by Adam. Adele has amazing singing talents but again, nowhere near those of Adam...but more importantly by far, I have not seen evidence that she has anywhere near the savvy and instincts that are shared by Gaga, and by Adam.
So, once again IMHO, what our Adam has is really the best of both of these diva's with one added extraordinary characteristic. He is an amazingly, unequalled beautiful man [important when females are the most loyal fans] with more charisma than both these ladies put together and multiplied.
He will create his own path to fame and fortune and successive performers will be using his rise to stardom as a template for their own strategies. He is not to be the next Gaga or Adele, he is to be the ideal for another generation. I have not a doubt in the world that this will come to be....he has far too much intelligence and immediacy not to accomplish whatever he goes after.
I enjoy Adele's music but her pre-curer is Celine Dion....make a mint....terrific singer....not iconic.
Gaga's precurser is Madona...who was iconic though it is unlikely she is making the kind of money Celine is....but I could be completely wrong here but this is not really about money but about fame and idolatry.
This is not about the details of each singer/star but about the place the have in the popular culture of the/their day. That is what I meant when I said some time back that I thought Adam's precursers were Elvis and Freddie...and I would add Bowie to that list...it is not that he performs like them or does things they did....it is that if he does things right he stands to have the credibility and the standing in people heart that these performers had/have.
Now what I want to know is, where is our Janice....!!??!!
All very interesting points.
However, the question was about preference of marketing strategies, not about what niche any of the artists fit in.
If we are looking at a choice between – strong promotion, lots of live performances and an organic build (21) or a balls-out, complete saturation, guerilla-marketing tactics (BTW), I'll take Adele's marketing strategy.
I think the meteoric rise of "Born This Way," and the resulting crash is analogous to the examples we've been using with artists like Kesha or Bieber in comparison to Adam. Some are Roman candles while others are slow and steady burners.
