'fraid I didn't get the Gaga hype. The face painting was interesting, didn't know why the big robe. What was disappearing to be on the big screen for? Glad Nile got some highlight. I would say maybe you had to be there but I didn't see the crowd loving it either. Then the intel commercial and I went what? What was the never before stuff? But it did mean that I saw the band which I didn't see in the performance. Could just be me, I've never gotten Bowie either so if she was staying true to his performances then maybe that's it. I must say the sound for too many performers has been atrocious. I felt like Adele's mike wasn't working so she had to push over it which sucked at her voice. Girl Crush sounded good. I know more about David Bowie than I know about Adam (which is saying a lot) --- and that had nothing to do with David Bowie's music. Nothing. ETA: I think Gaga fans will like it. I think Bowie fans will tend not to like it. I am not sure what non-partisan fans will think. I am biased. I thought it sucked! It did not seem like a tribute at all to me. While she was at the piano I watched in wonder if the mike was going to wack her in the head.

You said everything I was feeling! The music got lost in that frenzy they called a tribute. I felt bad for Niles.. surely he must have realized how bad it was.Pretty sure Nile was responsible for that productions--at least musically. He was the producer, right? He was a Musical Director....IDK what that entails exactly, especially in this case...

It is funny to read such diverging reactions from a fandom that all adores the same person....one would expect there to be more agreement. The thing is...David Bowie was outrageous so any production that was not outrageous, would not be true to his spirit...his artistic being. Who else in the music industry today ... other than Gaga....would put herself out there for the abuse she is sure to accrue, for the sake of being outrageous. Even our lovely Adam has given up on being outrageous, for the moment at least. He is wonderful and hugely talented...but not outrageous. How could Gaga do that, being 'genuine' ... and not be over the top. That is who she is and I would challenge anyone to come up with someone more suitable...seriously. I sort of think of it as the difference between presenting a version of the 'record'...which would simply require a good vocal rendering, or an alive performance, which requires so much more when you are talking about someone like Bowie. As always...and especially on this....ymmv lol David Bowie was a chameleon. One performance he could be like a comic book hero from an altered universe, in another incarnation he was the cool white duke, or a neo-disco king getting us to dance after we thought we were done with that. But no matter what form he appeared in -- he was always beautiful but cold/distant. Adam has many things in common with David Bowie -- the influences are clear. He is far more like David than he is like Freddie. But Adam is hot and sexy in a way David Bowie never was. For me, there was a very hard edge to Lady Gaga's performance and vocals. She was trying to be very male (like when she did the Joe character). I think the idea was interesting, but missed David Bowie essence. David Bowie was never crass. He never sang with that hard edge to his voice and his music was not composed for that. Some of the songs that were written to be light and fun were made aggressive and harsh. *** Frankly, I still think the best things they could have done were to get a man to sing the vocals -- the gender bending concept was a gimmick -- or make it a multi-artist tribute. I am sure this looked good on paper. I admit, maybe no one's performance of David's music would have satisfied me but no, I love David Bowie. I love his big productions, his music, his style, and his outrageous behavior on stage, but I got none of that tonight.

It's possible that Nile put together the flow originally but I didn't see him in the Intel commercial directing anything but did see lots of shots of Gaga directing the band and musicians. I'm thinking producer meant "put together the band".

I don't know about being 'record of the year' but I do like Up Town Funk. It's up beat, dancey, and a lot of fun.
