Evolution of an Artist: Adam Lambert at the State Theatre
By Keith Loria
When he was 8 years old, Adam Lambert’s parents enrolled him in a children’s theater company to do musicals and he fell in love with the stage immediately.
”It took all the things I loved, and those things I think I was predisposed to be good at, and put them all together,” he says. “I don’t think I ever wanted to do anything else but perform.”
Of course, Mr. Lambert would experience his first taste of fame on the eighth season of American Idol, finishing as runner-up to Kris Allen, but garnering millions of fans in the process.
Since his time on the show seven years ago, he’s released three acclaimed albums, sold more than 2.5 million records and sold more than 5 million singles worldwide. He’s even scored a Grammy nod in the process.
Reflecting on his time on American Idol, Mr. Lambert admits that it meant everything to him.
”Up until that point as a professional, I had only been employed as a musical theater performer, and I was in love with music, it was my first passion and I wanted to be me,” he says. “I started creating music and I realized very quickly that it was going to be tough with someone like me with my influences and style to get a real chance. I knew if I could get on TV and share what I did with the public, that could be the shortcut I was looking for. And it was. ‘Idol; was a springboard for me and I’m very thankful to the show.”
On March 1, Mr. Lambert will be at the State Theatre in New Brunswick in support of his latest release, The Original High, which debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200.
”This show is definitely kind of a product of my evolution. I’m exploring new ideas and new sounds,” the multi-platinum-selling artist says. “It’s been seven years since ‘Idol,’ and I’ve definitely grown up a bit. I approach things in different ways now and have learned a lot about my fans and myself as an artist, and musically, I’ve grown and broadened my palate, so to speak.”
When it comes to crafting a set list, Mr. Lambert puts a great deal of thought into the order of the songs and what comes where to take his audience on a journey.
”We start out being dramatic, angsty, and this dark theatrical sensibility, and it works its way into a more heartfelt, sensitive, vocal delivery and then we go to a party,” he says. “It represents the three parts of my personality, who I am and my three go-to emotions, and I think most people can relate to that. It’s about me, but I think everyone can find themselves in these songs and hopefully it can connect people at the end of the night.”
Although he’ll take some time out to talk to the crowd, Mr. Lambert reveals he’d rather let his songs do the talking for him.
”What I’m really excited about is that I let the music do it for me,” he says. “With this third album, which I feel is my strongest so far, I sort of have found a song for everything that I want to talk about.”
When not out on a solo tour, Mr. Lambert has served as the lead singer for Queen the past few years, and will continue to do so in 2016.
”It’s such an honor to sing lead for one of the greatest rock bands of all time, although it’s intimidating to be compared to Freddie Mercury because I think he was amazing,” he says. “I don’t think I can in anyway compete with him, but for me it’s not about that. It’s about bringing these songs to life for fans of the music and the band and help everyone remember what made the band so great in the first place.”
Mr. Lambert has also done a little acting, appearing on a handful of episodes of Glee two years ago and he’ll be playing Eddie in Fox’s upcoming revival of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
”I think it’s going to be a pretty amazing production,” he says. “It will have a lot of integrity to the original because they have Lou Adler on board (the original producer) and his son is producing the music. Kenny Ortega (the director) is no stranger to musicals on film and the cast they put together, I am honored to be a part of. I’m very excited.”
For now, Mr. Lambert is focusing on his new tour, welcoming Alex Newell (Unique from Glee) as his opening act, and looking forward to playing his new stuff for his fans.
”Come and be prepared to go on a roller coaster with me,” he says. “There are some songs from the last two albums as well and for fans of this new album, I’m finally getting to present them. It’s going to be a great time.”
Adam Lambert will perform at the State Theatre, 15 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, March 1, 7 p.m. Tickets cost $45-$65; statetheatrenj.org; 732-246-7469.
