@q3.. but where do your tax money go??? It depends on how you define taxes.... Federal taxes mostly go to pay for the military, debt for past military, and to pay civilian personnel. Social Security (minimum level pensions and disability payments), Medicare (medical care for people aged 65+ or so), Medicade (medical care for people who are low income) and Unemployment Payments come out of a separate budget with dedicated taxes and are slightly larger than other Federal spending. State and local taxes mostly pay for schools and roads, including most public universities, colleges and community colleges. The majority of Americans under 65 get their medical coverage from their employer. Work-based medical coverage is a unique American invention and no one has copied us. It is impossible to unwind the private insurance system. So what is not seen in our taxes is that 14% of our GDP is spent on medical care and the majority is not part of the Federal or State budgets -- we have a private insurance system associated with employment. Here is a breakdown from an anti-war site but it explains the two federal budgets pretty well... www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm

Well.. I was saying about this not getting easily friends in USA.. and very easily getting lonely as Sauli said.. I have been there.. In Finland you go out in a bar.. start to talk and the same night you will be the best of friends.. in USA you go out and everybody says hello and how are you doing.. and then.. they never contact you again!! I dont say that I am feeling a little bit of bitterness.. (LOL) .. but I understand what Sauli says.. you are great ..yeah..whow.. and then nothing. ))) Welcome finnrita. Speaking as a Canadian who has moved around quite a bit and lived in the US....I would say there is some truth in both your post and Q3's reply. Most of Canadians are, I would agree, very welcoming and friendly. But if you were to move to inner Toronto or to Ottawa, I am not convinced you would feel that way....sadly. I made more friends in 6 mos. out here in BC than in 6 years in Ottawa...and I am pretty outgoing not to mention Canadian :-) Also, I spent 6 years in Fairbanks AK..USA...and made lasting friends that I love dearly. I have met some amazing people from here on Atop as well, of course. People in Arkansas ... judging by the ones I met...are also terrific. So there you go.....how to know. I think a lot of the difference is really governed more by the size and cosmopolitanism of the community. When you are in a large urban city with a lot of diversity, people tend to stick to their own kind as it creates too much everyday pressure to be constantly working at understanding what other want and how you should respond. Just a thought....my personal experience...

I think that AI9 is supposed to represent a some-what clueless fan. Just my guess.
