Certainly, most of the albums I've purchased in the last 10-20 years were re-buys. Also, this latest format (digital MP3 or whatever your fav format is) didn't require me to buy it again - I ripped all my CDs this time. It took me a weekend to do a couple hundred CD's - re-buying always really annoyed me (I'm dealing with this now with books - do I want to buy books I already own in hardback AGAIN so I can have them on my Nook? - even worse - WHY am I paying a full printed book price for an ebook that doesn't have material costs, printing costs, physical distribution costs, etc?)
What I find unclear in this chart is would all those singles be selling if there wasn't an album behind them getting publicity? If the artist only released single after single, would they be able to get it noticed? Are small, unknown artists selling many singles or are the vast majority of those singles sold by a handful of big names?

Hmmm.....you know, I'm now wondering even harder what percentage of that rise is simply rebuying purely due to replacement, and whether maybe even 50% of that huge hump from ~1980-2003 is an artifical contruct due to rapid changes in media.
Looking at the curves, I wonder if we had something between CD's and MP3, whether that overall volume would be the same....just with another stripe of a different color (representing a metaphorical post-CD physical media) sitting there.

HSM - I think you're absolutely right! When I was first buying music in the late fifties (giving my age away, aren't I? Oh, well! , I bought mostly singles (2 songs for 99 cents on a 45rpm). Over the intervening years, I've replaced singles with vinyl albums, vinyl albums with 8-track tapes, 8-tracks with cassettes, cassettes with CDs, CDs with i-tunes music for my ipod - and thrown out each previous version as I no longer had any way to play the music!! It's actually a little scary to think about how many times and in how many types of media I've bought and re-bought the same music over the years!! So, if there had been yet another type of "music" media in there between CDs and i-tunes, I would have bought my favourite music in that format too. It's been interesting for me to see that we've sorta/kinda come full circle back to the way it was 50 years ago when singles were easier to get and people bought just the songs they liked without having to buy a full album. And yes, I think going forward that we'll see more EPs produced as AI is doing this season, and maybe in time more stand-alone singles being released without being part of an album.

EEKKKKK!!
HDD numbers appear to be final and Cook isn't on it. #50 is at 8K. That's really sad!

That is really too bad for Cook and it makes me somewhat scared for Adam. Apples & oranges to a certain extent I know. But still.
What really surprises me is Scotty's numbers. My first reaction is WTF music is this country listening to? Sorry, being honest here.
