Somehow I cannot imagine Becks and Adam even having dinner and drinks together. Forget about ending up in bed together. oh, BOOO, Q3, that is seriously underestimating David Beckham! Confession time here: while I have never participated in online fandom before, I have certainly been a fan before, mostly of sports teams and athletes as I really love watching sports. My childhood obsession was Michael Jordan, but the obsession of my early twenties was definitely David Beckham, at first because he's an absolutely fantastic footballer (actually frequently underrated, especially in his own country, despite his enormous name recognition), but eventually for reasons that have everything to do with my love of Adam. Talk about "left of center, out of the box!" David Beckham grows up in a working-class neighborhood and from a very young age is drafted into the incredibly macho and more or less misogynist, certainly homophobic, blokey world of seriously competitive English football. He spends all his time with boys, and there are few places that are more invested in macho-ness than men's locker-rooms, for obvious reasons. He dates a Spice Girl, and the media quickly paints him as a ladies man and a player. Nothing in his upbringing and background suggests that he should be anything else--he hasn't been exposed to anything else. Yet out of this emerges a man who fearlessly dresses in crazy, out of the box, outlandish fashions despite moving in a world suspicious of such "girlish" interests; a man who soon becomes a "gay icon" for his looks and his clothes, and when the press asks whether he feels threatened by this, responds with an incredulous: "No, I'm incredibly flattered;" Who famously wore a "skirt" (actually, a sarong, but don't expect the media or the football world to bother with such distinctions) and did so proudly, with (non-black, btw) nail polish on; A very much straight man who happily wears make up; A sports celebrity at the top of his profession who has long counted amongst his very best friends Elton John and his partner. All this from a straight man long before the "Glee-Adam Lambert" age where "gay" is slowly becoming "cool" in pop-culture, and, remember, in a professional world--top-level men's competitive sports and football--that is famous for its homophobia and misogyny. And, on that latter topic, while I'm at it, Becks, ignoring the popular "WAG" meme, has been nothing but massively supportive of his wife's career even when it faltered with respect to his own, and even through a vicious press that wanted to paint her as manipulative of his professional interests; he is by all accounts an equally involved parent despite coming from a world with stark gender divides (and frankly this is more than can be said of many men from supposedly "enlightenend" liberal circles); He is happily the less outspoken, forceful member of his couple, and when he is teased about being "whipped" (as happened frequently in the british press/public at the time) smiles and ignores it as he should. He always and vocally respects women in general and his wife in particular as a serious professional person, even when the outside world refused to take her seriously as anything other than a silly sex symbol. I think if David Beckham (and Victoria, who's made the surprised move of being a celebrity fashion designer actually respected in the serious fashion world) wanted to have dinner or drinks with Adam, Adam would and should be thrilled. Plus, they're an in to Elton! And, by the way, I'm sure they'd be totally thrilled to meet him, and they'd all get along like gangbusters! (Sorry,Q3--poor lady didn't know what she was opening up with that innocent throw-away comment!) OOOOOOOh and while we're on football, did anyone watch that incredible World Cup quarterfinal match yesterday between the US Women and Brazil? Possibly the most exciting, dramatic 130 mins of football I've ever seen (especially with a happy ending!) --Q3, sounds like you may have watched it!
