The strange process of becoming an Adam fan....
next stop: Quebec

My story is not unusual. I have read it many times. Once day I was casually watching the American Idol audition show – there was nothing on TV. A charming young man appeared on stage in front of the judges. Then he sang. It was all over.
Like seemingly hundreds of thousands – maybe millions -- of other people, American Idol became a much-watch TV show for me. I started to make sure that I never had any commitment on Tuesday or Wednesday nights.
But I did not know there was anyone else going through this same experience.
After a few weeks, I discovered a few online Idol blogs and forums. I wandered into ONTD_AI, MJs, Idol Forum, and many other places online. And everywhere I went I found out that other people had the exact same experience. Many, like me, were “fans” for the first time.
Flash forward…….to today.
I am getting ready to pack my bags one more time and fly across the country – actually leave the country – to see a performance that will last about 1 hour. It isn’t the first time I done this and I imagine it won’t be the last time. And, in some odd way, what would have seemed like total insanity to me in December 2008, now seems to make some strange cosmic sense.
For me, it is more than the music and the performer. It has become as much about the amazing community that has been inspired by Adam to share, to dance and to celebrate.
So for the folks headed up to Quebec later this week, I know we will all have an amazing time and I hope we connect. And for the people who will be joining in the celebration via digital links and online messages, I promise to bring as much of the event as possible back to Adamtopia. (Only 5-1/2 days to go!!!)

Mad World

I must admit that I considered not writing anything for today. When the news is so grim, it seems beyond frivolous to do anything other than to listen to the radio or watch TV and try to comprehend unspeakable tragedies. As much as I love Adam, he can’t take away the reality of death or the nightmare of violence. His voice is beautiful but it can’t sing people back to life. So yeah, there are times when things shift back into their correct perspective, and what happens in the world rightfully overshadows anything that happens in the fandom.
And yet I realize that because of my participation in the fandom, the way I experience the world has changed. These days, I am routinely minutes or hours ahead of traditional news sources because everything crosses Twitter within seconds of happening. The first few tweets might get some of the facts wrong, but the truth comes out pretty fast and spreads lightning-quick.
But more remarkable than the speed of the news is my connection to it. Many times I “know” people who live near wherever an event occurred, and my first thoughts are of their safety and well-being. The world is smaller and more intimate, and I am connected to even distant corners of it more than I ever have been before. It hurts more when people I’ve come to care about are hurting, and words of condolence feel useless. And then I remember how comforting it is when someone sends a few kinds words my way, and I realize that the intention is everything.
Being exposed to so many varied viewpoints can have its downside. Sometimes the way people react makes me scratch my head or grit my teeth. But much of the time it validates what I am feeling or else opens my mind to other perspectives. It’s the connections that we have that allow us to stay sane when things make no sense. And thanks to Adam many of us have a wider and more diverse circle of connections than we ever had before.
There is much for us to look forward to. This Friday we have a concert, and nine days after that is Behind The Music. We will flail over pics and vids, we’ll laugh over gifs, we’ll share the fun and the drama of stanning for many months to come. None of that changes the fact that bad things have happened, and will continue to happen. When they do, we will pause to mourn, and we will move forward, because that’s what people do. There’s no right way to grieve; no correct timeframe for healing.
Adam can’t erase pain or make evil go away. But in the aftermath of tragedy there is a place for laughter and pleasure, and those who can make us laugh and bring us pleasure are those who help us survive and keep us connected, with love.
I’m so grateful to Adam, and to all of you, for that connection.
