CLEVELAND, Ohio - How do you step into the platform shoes of one of the best rock frontmen of all time?
You don't.
Adam Lambert, who delivered a knock-out performance Friday night with rock royalty Queen, knows this.
"There will only be one Freddie Mercury, " the singer said to the near capacity crowd at The Q, a mix of those old enough to have seen Mercury back in the day, and teens who weren't even born when he passed away in 1991. "Just like you, I'm a fan. Except I'm up here in the gayest suit you've ever seen," he said referring to his chartreuse lame and sequin get-up.
It was one of several costume changes the flamboyant singer trotted out, in true Freddie Mercury fashion, at Friday's show. Besides Lambert the band consisted of founding members Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums, with a new backing band.
There was the butch leather vest and pants look; the red leather look; the white and black Liberace sequined suit; and the Carnaby-street striped pants and blue blazer.
But while Lambert channeled Mercury's flashy side, and proved himself adept at some of the late singer's trickiest numbers, including an epic "Bohemian Rhapsody" and killer "Killer Queen," he did not try to replace the irreplaceable frontman. The charismatic "American Idol" winner paid homage and brought new life to these classics, but didn't mimic his idol. In one of the evening most memorable moments, vintage video footage of Queen was woven the live mix of Lambert's soaring vocal and May's rocketing riffs on "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Though Lambert may be the frontman, May was the true star of Friday's show. The guitar god did not disappoint.
Queen was impressively energetic all night, but the band was especially engaging when Lambert and May walked out on the neck of the guitar shaped-stage that jutted into the audience.
Mercury would have been proud of their showmanship, too. Memorable moments included Lambert flouncing on a flowery pink bike to "Bicycle Race" and May doing a moving acoustic "duet" with a video version of Mercury on "Love of My Life."
Queen touched on most of their hits in the two hour set, including a thumping "Another One Bites the Dust," a fierce "Fat Bottom Girls" and a strutting "Stone Cold Crazy." A driving "Under Pressure" got the crowd on its feet. A notable omission was "Keep Yourself Alive."
But no song got the crowd more pumped than the encore - what else, "We Will Rock You" and "We are the Champions." May's epic riff on the first, one of the best in rock 'n' roll, was almost topped by Lambert's strutting shouts and shiny silver crown and suit. Almost.
